Is there a way to create a variable on the fly inside the tool that is open. Choose the area that needs the distance and enter something like (height=20)? Then the next time you need to use this variable it is in the variable table.
Also the ability to add a formula.
Might be worth providing details of the software and version being used as this can make a difference in relation to Parametrics.
