How can I report quantities instead of instances?

I am using MIcrostation CONNECT Edition Update 13 - Version 10.13.01.01

My goal is to have multiple cell libraries with each cell having an item attached. The seed/dgn library will have the report already formatted. The final report will show the quantity and details of each item type/cell.  So instead of listing 3 versions of the 3 instances of one cell, it will show the quantity 3 in the row for the item type/cell.  I am attaching the current exported excel file. I think I may have to create two separate reports. One that lists instances (as I am describing) and another where the items are ordered in lengths.

The OP is looking for a way to define a cell count in a MicroStation CONNECT Report.  At the time of this post (CONNECT Update 13) that's not possible: Reports don't offer aggregate functions.  This Idea to provide aggregate functions in Reports was proposed in 2017 and has the highest number of votes of any Idea.

You can only do it in Excel

It's a workaround.  I'm sure that it would work, in that you could see cell counts in an Excel worksheet, but it doesn't answer the question about Reports.  If a Report could handle aggregates, then it would be a source of data for a Table, all without leaving MicroStation.  Performing the calculation externally in Excel means there is a disconnect between the DGN source data and the Report in MicroStation.

Other tools include FlexiTable CONNECT Edition and the freeware VBA Cell Counter.  However, neither provides the integrated functionality that would be available if Reports were to offer aggregate functions.

  • Oh Jon!  you must  really dislike excel....

Ok then  the op clearly has excel available as the op produced his BOM  and posted it as excel, now without any other external software the OP could therefor use aggregation in excel, via filters , equations If statements or many other ways.. but as we both said its not yet  possible in CE13  without 3rd party software or make your own vba So I have answered his post about reports in CE13 and that it cant  do what he wants it to.

Excel is a viable FIRST  go to workaround as most users in an engineering office today are very competent in excel and if not there would be an office champion or google on how to do the sort and total by sorts ie aggregation....now before you roast me over my love of excel...

Microstation ( apart from my high school sweet heart, who l went on to marry ) is and will always be my first love ( well maybe not CE more like a girl friend on the side) ... but if I didn't have MS office then I would use  Open office's   equivalent to excel or any other spreadsheet tool...

In this modern era as engineering tools,  spreadsheets are invaluable.

  • Totally agree 100% with you Jon well said

Even the old tags and reports were pretty good back in the day  but limited but made almost totally impossible for users to learn how make use of them from bentley documentation and help even in  V8i and previous  ( and I have poured over the original manuals for V4 unix and  V5 for dos were ever tags mentioned ) ..  but I suppose if your a developer you get better dox... I learned how create the tags and how to make simple reports from tags in v8 and tagged element properties   like element area back in 2010  without vba or any other programming and I found out how from a little article called TAGS 101 in a magazine called Eat your own cad ( if I recall correctly by Karen Fuggle, thanks  Karen )  which explained it beautifly  and showed how to do BOMs etc .. But for day to day use  I use a 3rd party vba to extract tag data to excel especially title block tags and back to dgn or even acad dwgs

For the benefit of others I have posted the article as  a  pdf in these forums and can be searched by its title  but it may be in archives now ... 10 years is an old post ... and  CE does do it better  but not good explanations for first time users of Items in lieu of tags....

  • Hi All, we are working on reports and adding aggregates is one of the priorities.

That's good to hear!  FlexiTable for MicroStation V8i has provided those facilities for many years.  FlexiTable CONNECT Edition is doing that now...

Note the aggregate row at the bottom of the worksheet.

  • That is fantastic news!  Would it be possible to share a timeline?

  • We are working to have aggregates and other enhancements in MicroStation Update 15.
