This drives me nuts as I always have to go the "interactive" dialog
If I attach a reference the setting "cached" is default. The cached attachment gets this weird text display. Anyway the caching seems not to bring any benefits for simple drawings (?) - on the contrary...
Is there a setting to change that? In the preferences for references there is only a setting to switch on "Always in Cache" which is exactly the contrary of what I want to achieve.
If I choose to reference a file "identical" - as it should be mostty in my workflows - I always need to still go "interactive" through the attachment dialog.
At the same time I also would want to generally have the Drawing Border set to"(none)" - I cant find a preference setting for this as well.
(Sorry if i have the wording not quite right here - I am using a german interface and the last time I switched the language I had to completely reinstall as the german language option was completly lost... I do not want to through that again - I have work to do)
Hello Gerd, very good points that you mentioned there. I feel the same way. Until this day I have not found out in which situations the cached option seems to be working better. In contrary: The loading times are horrible and the reflection of changes is confusing because you have no direct control via a button, like the reload button for attachements. Also I have not found a use for the created drawing boundaries yet. To make it easier for non germans I added a picture of the attachment dialog in the english version. The setting you called "interactive" is called "dynamic" in the english version.

Hi,
I'm also confused and the feeling as that the behaviour has changed somewhere along the way. It now seems to be the default when 3D files are attached to 2D files.
You can, however, set the default by defining the following variable:
MS_REF_VISEDGE_ATTACH_STATE = Dynamic

This setting does not exist under the MS_REF_DEFAULTSETTINGS variable and could be added if desired by requesting an enhancement, but as mentioned by Krister there is a separate variable for this.

Hi Kirster, very good. Thanks for this. I guess I never would have guessed it under something "visedge"
Is there a good reason why the CacheAutomatic is default what should be the benefit? I guess still most users referencing would be rather dynamic.
btw. The the Variable MS_RFDIR - which I particularly fancy - is an example where the "prefix MS_REF... seems broken. it is not even listed in Help as a variable regarding references.

MS_RFDIR
That variable (MS_RFDIR) has been around for so long that the document writers consider it part of a MicroStation user's DNA. Like other useful variables (e.g. MS_DEF) it does not appear as a search result in MicroStation Help. Why not?
MS_DEF

And _DGNDIR. I use it to get PDFs printed into the same directory as the active file. I mean Why is MS_PLTFILES and _USTN_OUT for that matter directed to some OFF place in the first place.
Having variables per default pointing to non-userfriendly folders is probably very time consuming for the "vanilla" user.
The "normal" user has to push around any print or output without previously having a admin training. Many user don't have an admin at hand.
Setting the variables "right" can be very time consuming.
They appaear when you go through. https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/w/microstation__wiki/24873/microstation-connect-edition-configuration-variables.
I recently discussed MS Office help. I consider THAT one a shame. MicroStation help - became much better over the years. But honestly I rather find most questions nowadays better answered in the communities.
