I have imported .obj and .fbx furniture items but cannot unlock, ungroup or otherwise manipulate them without reducing them to individual mesh triangles
What version (e.g. v10.x.y.z) of MicroStation or other product are you using?
Can you post a sample of an object? Use the Insert|Insert image/video/file button to attach a file here.

Hi Jon,
Many thanks for the rapid response, I'm using Microstation Connect Edition update 13 10.13.01.01 a dropbox link to the microstation file is attached along with the original .fbx I'm trying to import and edit.
As you can see there are a bunch of sofas and I want to separate them and to be able to attribute materials to the different components.

I don't see the link but by your description try using this:
Go to Modeling \ Mesh \ Modify Meshes \ Split Mesh \ By Edge Connectivity
Your mesh should split accordingly.
See help for more enlightenment.
