Moving an Object to A Point Perpendicular to A Line

I am a new user working with MicroStation Connect.

I am trying to move an object to a point perpendicular to a line.
If I right-click in the Snaps toolbox, both Perp and Perp Point are checked.
In my AccuSnap Settings, Enable AccuSnap is checked.  Default settings also show Perp and Perp Point checked.
If I move the object, press the space bar, and click Snaps; Perpendicular is not checked.

Isn't there a simple shortcut key for perpendicular?

  • Use Accudraw. You can select the element you want to move, tentative snap to the element you want to move perpendicluar to and hit O on your keyboard, This point will become Accudraw's origin point. Type RE (Rotate Accudraw to element) select the element you tentative snapped. Accudraw will rotate to this element. Using the Axis Lock on Accudraw you can type in a distance to move the element perpendicular.

  • Thanks for the reply, mwlong.

I am getting lost when you said, "tentative snap to the element you want to move to".  Being a new user, I am thinking you mean press the right and left mouse buttons and click on the object I am moving to.  Nothing seems to happen when I do that.  The X cursor will click to a spot but not on the line.

It might be easier to explain what I am trying to do in AutoCAD terms.

    AutoCAD:
1  Click the object I'm going to move
    2  Type M for Move
3  Move Cursor and Snap to origin point of move.
4  Move object and click highlighted (perpindicular) point for new location.

  • Ok, I did not realize you were just moving the element over to another element. I thought you wanted to move your horizontal line to the vertical line, then offset the horizontal line a distance perpendicular off of the vertical line.

If your graphic represents a real case scenario where the horizontal line is already at the correct location in relation to the vertical line and all you need to do to move the horizontal line to contact the vertical use the Align Elements to Edge tool.

A note on tentative snap: Yes the right/left mouse button combination is tentative snap by default. Most users prefer to switch that to the middle mouse button. The tentative snap honors the snap mode you have set. So if just keypoint snap is set it will not snap to a random spot on a line. For a line the keypoint will snap to the end points & any other point defined by the snap divisor. You would need to use nearest snap for a random spot on a line.

I have not been working much with CONNECT, but I know in some versions of v8i (it may be specific to Power InRoads) I have experienced issues with snapping perpendicular in some operations. I believe one of those operations may be what you are explaining. It is a possible defect. Maybe others have time to investigate.

  • Thanks, mwlong

That's what I was looking for, and I appreciate the additional information.

I thought I would add some notes for others specific to moving an object parallel to another.  The user's program setup may differ, but the notes may help.

    MicroStation CONNECT Edition
    In the Drawings Workflow
Move Element to a point Parallel to another element
Home > Manipulate (Toolbox) > Align Elements by Edge (drop-down) >Select the Align Elements by Edge tool.
    From the Align Drop-down,
Make a selection (where/direction you are moving to).
Select the Base element for alignment (The object you want to align to)
The object will move to the chosen location.
Click in the drawing area to accept the results.

    Thanks again,

    Koog

  • Works the same in Microstation, "click object" is select element, "Type m" is right click and select move command, snaps will do what they do according to their setting. But I'm not understanding something here, the 2 elements must already be perpendicular, there is no perpendicular point per se. The perpendicular point snap is for constructing an element perpendicular to another originating at a particular point. Plane old perpendicular snap is for constructing a line to a certain point.
