  • Hi Chris,

    We now have this ability in MicroStation U15 (which will be in OpenBuildings Designer U8 due for release during Q1).

    Details to follow as I have only just started using this new feature so need to evaluate the best practice for it's use:

  • Hi Marc,

    OBD Update 8 installed... I did not figure how to get shadows on my dynamic views. Still not implemented ?

  • Hi Chris,

    This ability is now available in U8. It can be set to work with either solar or source lighting. To enable it for solar lighting add the following configuration statement to your shared Standards.cfg or other appropriate CFG:

    MS_SMOOTHMODE_SHADOWS = 1

    To control the opacity of the shadows, use the Light Manager > Flashbulb and increase the value as required. The effect of Ambient appears to be quite minor in this context so can be turned off. To see the shadows in views placed on sheets the Visible Edges settings must be Dynamic, using Cached will not display the shadows.

    This quick video shows the basic operation.

    Our documentation on this is brief:

    "QuickVision Shadow Dynamics: To use the new shadows which will in most cases be much faster when manipulating a view than default method you will need to add a couple of configuration variables. The old method turns off shadows completely then redraws the shadows once the view manipulation stops. If you enable the new shadows the shadows are drawn continuously.

    MS_SMOOTHMODE_SHADOWS = 1 This variable will add shadow dynamics for solar light only.

    MS_SMOOTHMODE_SHADOWS_ALL = 1 This variable will add shadow dynamics for source lights in your scene.

    NOTE: If enabled the selection of elements in the shadow shaded view can be very slow, the workaround would be to use a non-shaded or shadowed view for selection."
