MS CE U14 issue: Measure Distance Min/Max Between - transient element remains

When using the Measure Distance tool with Method: Minimum Between or Maximum Between, the transient element that appears when you identify the 2nd element will remain visible if you change to a different command without doing a reset. The transient element will remain visible until you activate the Measure tool again.

The transient element should disappear when another command is selected. The only exception to this might be if you switch to a view rotate command, because this would allow you to rotate the view to better understand the distance that is being measured.

  • Hi Ron,

This feature was brought back in Update 14, but thank you for your observations. Can you give the reason for your request in case this is filed  as an  enhancement?

    Regards,

I can think of plenty of reasons that the transient measurement element should disappear when choosing another command - primarily, that I would be finished measuring and moving on to other things. I can't think of any reason why it should hang around until I eventually want to measure something else. If this is a transient element for the sole purpose of illustrating a measurement, then it should be eliminated when any other command is selected because measurement is finished.

I can appreciate Ron's suggestion that View commands may not make it disappear, and that makes sense to me. However, nearly any other command should trigger the removal of the single-use transient element.

Otherwise, is there a command to "refresh" the screen and delete all transient elements? I can see a lot of confused users working around elements that aren't even "real".

  • Hi Mary,

I can't think of any reason why it should hang around until I eventually want to measure something else.

I think it's exactly the way how the measurement worked in V8i: The measured distance was displayed until the tool restart.

In my opinion it should stay as it works now, because the persistent transient element is the only (as far as I know ;-) way how to identify and snap to points on solids, representing where the minimum distance starts/ends.

    With regards,

  • Hi,

I confirmed this with our developers that the transient element is snapable and users in the past have used this as a drawing aid. User can also use the location of this element for further design and calculation purposes.

  • Hi Regie,

The snapable, "design aid" aspect of the transient element is not explained in the help documentation.

It says A temporary "line" is displayed as a visual aid but is not placed in the design.

There is no mention of it remaining if another tool is chosen, or that it is snapable, or how to get rid of it.

I think there should be a toggle on the Measure dialog to make the transient "persistent" and "snapable" until untoggled, rather than the way it currently works. If there was a toggle on the dialog it would be a much more obvious option to the user.

I personally had never noticed this transient behavior and was unaware of it.

A "useful" feature of a tool is only useful if the user is aware that it exists.

    Ron
