I have a spreadsheet that identifies individual itemized vegetation (S1 - S400, for example) along with the northing and easting values of where the vegetation is located. I have created Item Types within my DGN file. Is it possible to place a corresponding cell and attach the item type all in the same process through some sort of import function?
To simplify what I want to import; there would be 4 columns in my spreadsheet:
1. Vegetation_Number
2. Northing (Y location)
3. Easting (X Location)
4. Item_Type (Item Type I want to attach already existing in my file)
There will be more columns with other type of data but that is not of concern, this can already be done once the cell has the item type attached.
(Otherwise, I understand that you would need to manually place the cells, attach the item type and then change the Vegetation_Number manually so that the proper corresponding data is presented.)
If you already have the Item Types attached to the cells and Item Type in your post correspond to a tree cell maybe you could use the tool XYZ Text to import csv data. That way you can place different cells.
Export the Excel file to csv. Like:
123456.33,565344.007,13.5,BIRCH
123446.03,565356.017,13.1,PINE
Use Import Coordinates and the format XYZC

Thanks Krister,
My biggest problem is automatically assigning a unique ID to the cell at import that identifies the unique data from the spreadsheet for that cell. For example, Cell S-1 would be 10 ft tall and be damaged, Cell S-2 could be 5 feet tall and in good health. Just an FYI, we are identifying Saguaro Cacti in this example. The unique ID is identified by the northing and easting location within the spreadsheet.

Ok, then I'm back to recommending you to try the FDO Reader!
Have a look at this video for an example on loading data and attributes from a text file.
