Good morning,
we are working with embedded Excel Sheets inside dgn-files. Before we updated our MicroStation from Update 13 to 14, everything worked well and there was no problem to open embedded Excel Sheets.
After the Installation of Update 14 it is not possible anymore. Why?
We need this feature because nearly all drawings we created in the past (and also drawings we have to create in the future) have an embedded Excel sheet.
Please help me in this case. Thanks in Advance.
With Kind regards,
Andreas Schlütter
Thanks for supplying this example DGN file. I was able to open it ok within Update 14 and could this embedded Excel spreadsheet displaying as a table to the right of the title block. This is not displaying any data. Is this what you are meaning is your problem or is it related to physically opening this spreadsheet within Excel external to MicroStation from within this DGN?
I did also note that the file is connected with a "GEC-Workspace" which can affect the operations within MicroStation. Have you tried opening the file outside of this in a No Workspace, for example?

Hi Andrew,
our problem is, that we are not able to open the embedded Excel sheet to fill in information. Before we installed Update 14, we made a double click on the sheet inside MicroStation and could work in the sheet.
My chief executive officer deleted the data inside this excel sheet because there were sensitive data in it.
It is correct that the file is connected with a GEC-Workspace, because this is our Workspace inside the Group and there were never Problems with it.
We also tried to open the file without this Workspace but it didn't work anymore.
Thank you.

I think we understand the described issue well.

What Office version and Windows version do you use?

It's how MicroStation CE Update 14 works on our computers (at least Andrew's and mine) using your DGN file.

I think that your installation has been corrupted somehow and it's not problem of MicroStation CE Update 14. It's complicated to guess what can be wrong, because it can be caused problem during the update process, corrupted upf or other file(s) or not functional communication between MicroStation and Excel.
I would recommend to uninstall MicroStation completely, remove preferences file (at least upf) and try to install MicroStation again.
Maybe also some other tests can be done to try to narrow where the problem can be: e.g. to try to past Excel sheet to new empty design file and try to open it again in Excel (to ensure whether only opening, or also inserting does not work), to restore MicroStation defaults, to repair MicroStation installation etc.

Jan

Hello Jan,
we use Microsoft 365 Enterprise Edition.
We deinstalled MS U14 and installed it 2 times. As you said we deleted the upf-files also.
The first time we installed it in the English Version and the second time in the German Version.
No try was of success.
So we decided to deinstall U14 completely and go 1 step backwards and reinstalled U13 to get our work done for our customers.
Because in U13 it is no problem to open the Excel Sheets.
I don't know why we we have such a problem, when it is possible for you to use it "normally".
Thank you for your hard work. We have to evaluate where the problem can be in our System.
Onc again, thanks.
Have a nice Weekend.

It's interesting, I recommend to create Service Ticket with this information. When U14 works fine for others but not in your case, but U13 works fine, it seems something tiny has changed somewhere :-(
It's the reason I do not like any integration between software ... it's like to have two black boxes trying to communicate somehow, but it's nearly impossible (and requiring specific rare knowledge) to understand what can be wrong.
Regards,
I just tried your example file and had the same problem. I found the following solution in a post to another thread:
f.mandoki said:You need to run the key-in mdl load olecntr. This loads the MDL routine needed.
Once I entered the key-in mdl load olecntr I was able to double-click the embedded spreadsheet and edit it.
Regards,Ron
I can confirm that above solution with key-in mdl load olecntr works well.
Offce 365.
