I seem to have lost all control of levels when I merge a file that is referenced. I either get all on Default level or it prepends all the level names with the name of the reference file. I want them to retain the level name, but it feels like AutoCad (boo).
I'm using User Preference should below, am I missing something else? This seems to to u14.

Hi Bob,
The issue appears to be the elements on levels with "." in the name. Generally MicroStation does not support such a naming convention. Therefore when the reference is merged the elements on these levels are going to the "Default" level.
I am also looking into this because this naming convention can be used elsewhere.

Regie
hi Regie- Thanks for reply. Jan answered and I verified earlier. Your answer is not quite correct. One of the problems with trying to troubleshoot this was that even if just one level name was "illegal", all the others would misbehave as well. Plus Microstation seems a bit inconsistent. Depending on how your preferences are set you may get unexpected results. Just one of a multitude of bugs still in Connect. It's very frustrating. A few, a very few of the defects I've had to deal with have been resolved.

I am currently working with the development team and product managers to see the best way to handle this issue. I will provide feedback on my findings.
Hi Bob/Jan,
I have filed Enhancement 1099720 to add support for character special characters in level name for the addition of this feature.
I also filed Defect 1099726 against merging reference DXF/DWG results in element being moved to Default level
I filed the defect because I tested this in MicroStation V8i SS10 and the level remains intact with the elements on correct
level. This appears to have been supported in V8i. Addressing the enhancement should resolve the defect.
Yea, that Defect 1099726 is bad. If you're not paying attention it can ruin your day. Pretty sure this did not do this under <R12 or 13.
I wanted to give an update on this issue.
This issue is being addressed and tested and should be included in a future release of MicroStation.
