Select by Fence

I am a new MicroStation CONNECT Edition user (Version 10.13.01.01)

Can I use the Fence tool to make a selection.

I would like to use Fence and Flood to select everything in my drawing area, then use the Select tool filters to select what I want to change.

Thanks,

Koog

  • You cannot use the Select tool filters on a fence selection.

You can use the Select tool to select by a box or a shape.

If I can remember correctly, you CAN use the Select By Attributes tool on a fenced area. That may get you close to whatever you intend to do.

  • MaryB,

Thank you for the information.  Wouldn't it be great if you could select flood and have everything selected within an enclosed area?  I get tired of drawing shapes around everything.

    Thank you so much,

  • I could see the benefit of a "Select Flood". You could always post it to the Ideas section of this board so people can vote for it if they like it. If an idea gets enough support, Bentley sometimes considers actually adding it to the software.

I use scratch/no-plot levels for shapes I need to use again and again. That doesn't help for a one-off situation, but it comes in handy for areas I keep coming back to. Since I can fence by element, I can recreate that fence any time I need it. But that doesn't answer the select by "region" with a single click because a fence selection isn't quite the same as a select selection.

It may not be too hard to cobble up a VBA that would convert a fence selection to a select selection, but you'd have to be interested in writing VBA.

whats wrong with  no fence and choose select all  with the pull down file menu or Control A, then the  powerselector  can use filters since everything is selected and change what you want to keep...

  • Here is a regular use scenario where fence select would be beneficial:

I have a huge 3D context model that I need to clear exg buildings and topography from the site. I have a boundary line which I make a fence from, and would like to select by fence clip so I can then filter view to those elements only dissecting (or fully within) the site boundary.

I can copy or move these elements, stretch them or move/copy to a new file, but I cannot just select them.

The element selection tool options provide fence box, shape and circle selections but I cannot use an existing fence, or use fence from element, meaning I have to manually select each element, or painfully trace the boundary with the line option, which does not honour snaps.
