Clipping using grouped holes

AskInga Tip #689

Does anyone know how to use this method but to retain the information inside the holes? In other words invert the selection?

  • That's an interesting question.

A Reference Mask does the reverse of a Reference Clip. However, the mask only works on a fence, and doesn't allow for holes. I don't see how it is possible to use that method to get the results you want.

The only workaround that comes to mind is as follows:

    • Open the referenced dgn file as the active design file
    • Create Saved Views of the "Hole" areas
    • Go back to the master dgn file
    • Use the Reference Mask tool to clear the outside area
    • Attach the Save Views from the referenced dgn file to see the Hole areas.

At the end of the process you will have the same dgn file (or model) attached to the master multiple times, once for the mask, and then a separate attachment for each saved view to display inside the masked area. Keeping the reference display order correct will be key to not having the mask wipe out the saved view attachments.

  • The clipping using grouped holes also works with the View Clip Volume tool with the By Element option.

So I tried using the View Clip Mask tool on the same grouped hole, but that does not work either. The entire area is masked.

  • Thanks Rod for your input, we tried these methods as well, nothing seems to work. The only option we seem to have is to reference in the file multiple times and then clip each one to the shape.

Looking at other posts its seems users have been trying to figure this out or get Bentley to come up with a solution for years. So good to know Im not aloane in this mystery. lol

  • could you post a picture of what you have before clip and what you want to achieve after clip, the vid clip from ask inga just makes it unclear as to what you have... and is the clipping element   grouped hole in the active file  or the ref file?
