Line type Scale in a reference

I have a drawing that has all my existing pipes drawn in it. We use the same custom line style for all the pipes but adjust the line style scale so that the pipes display as their true width.

The annotation scale in this existing pipes drawing is 1"=50' and I've made sure that each pipe displays as their true width in this drawing with the annotation scale set.

When I reference this existing pipes drawing into another base map, which also has its annotation scale set to 1"=50', the pipes show significantly larger (over 4x their intended size) even though the reference scale is set to 1:1.

The reference was attached coincident - world. True scale, scale line styles by reference scale, and use active annotation scale are all checked on (and checking them on/off does nothing).

The model setting are: annotation scale 1:=50', propagate annotation scale is checked on and Line Style Scale is set to annotation scale.

What setting an I missing? Why are the pipes in my reference drawing still displaying incorrectly?

  • Good luck!

  • Ah. I think the line style must have a different definition between the two files.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Is it possible that these files were created from two different seed files, or that one of them may have a different definition for that line type, or could the working unit definitions be different?

There are a few things that could be at play here. Tracking down custom linestyle issues isn't fun.

What happens if you detach the reference, then reattach it with Global Linestyle Scale set to "reference" and the other things you mentioned (true scale, use annotation scale, etc. OFF?

  • I'm using V8i, SS4, 08.11.09.878.

I played around with the "Global LineStyle Scale" setting for that reference and changing it from master to reference didn't change anything. The pipes still showed ~4x larger than they should.

  • Which version of MicroStation are you using?

The setting I think you really want to look at is not one of the toggles at the bottom. You want one from the pull-downs slightly above that called "Global LineStyle Scale" and I believe you will want to set it to "Reference".

From a document I wrote up for my office:

    Global Linestyle Scale

The scale of custom linestyles can be controlled by the annotation or global scale applied in the reference file, controlled by the annotation or global scale of the active drawing, or controlled by multiplying the scale factor of the reference by the scale factor of the active drawing...when a drawing contains only “real world” linestyles that should not be scaled, such as pavement markings, that drawing should always be attached using the “reference” setting.

The "scale linestyles by reference scale" really only applies if your attachment is scaled up or down. Since you are attached at 1:1, it won't really apply here.
