Saving V8 into V7 - Text change

Hi there, new user to Mocrostation. i use V8 XM Edition, a colleague has another version. I have been able to send him my DGN files and everything was fine, but on the last one he said he couldn't open it. I saved it into V7 but it changed all the text from times new roman to simplex (i think). but he could open it. Is there a way to stop this from happening or could any one shed any light on why he suddenly couldn't open them in the V8 version? i do not know what version he has (waiting to hear back from him) and i do not know what i have changed for him to no longer be able to open them.

Is there a setting somewhere that keeps the tecxt the same when saved to V7?

thanks in advance.

  • V7 (a very, very old version) cannot use True-Type fonts. It can only use fonts from an RSC file.

If the font used for a piece of text can't be found (or can't be used) it will be replaced by a default RSC font.

  • Thanks for the response. I don't suppose you could think of a reason why originally he could open my dgn files no problem and then all of a sudden he could not? are there any obvious settings to check?

You haven't told us what version of MicroStation your colleague uses.  The History of MicroStation may help.

The MicroStation V7 format was directly support by MicroStation for several decades, before Bentley Systems introduced the V8 format in 2001.  Among many benefits was support for TrueType fonts.  The V7 format does not support TrueType.

I don't suppose you could think of a reason why originally he could open my dgn files no problem and then all of a sudden he could not?

With MicroStation V8 you can read and save a DGN file in V7 format as well as the native V8 format.

But we don't know your colleague's version, so anything we write here is speculation.

    No.

  • V7 only allows 63 levels per DGN, and it does not have the capability to handle more than one model per DGN.

I haven't tried to open a V8 drawing in V7, but I believe either of those could cause major problems.

There were a LOT of changes between V7 and V8, in terms of the DGN data format. While some simple drawings may be able to opened in V7, there are many functions in V8 that were simply not available to V7 and probably cannot be read.

  • Hi Eddy,

    i use V8 XM Edition

It's very old, and honestly, not very good, MicroStation version. MicroStation V8 XM Edition was similar to Windows Vista: A lot of new ideas, new technologies incorporated, but all together, it just did not work well. XM was more like "beta version or preparation" for much much better V8i.

    I saved it into V7

When it's not really necessary (which is not clear from your description), never convert DGN V8 to V7!

As  and also  wrote, DGN V7 has many limitations (it's extremely old format), so you will probably lost some data (e.g. discussed text formatting), plus it's easy to produce incorrect file (over max size, shifted coordinates...).

i do not know what version he has

    It's crucial information.

or could any one shed any light on why he suddenly couldn't open them in the V8 version?

Without knowing a bit more about the file itself, it's hard to guess.

If he has newer version than is yours XM Edition, maybe he did a change that is not backward compatible (even when it should not happen).

If your colleague has V8i, he can try verifydgn tool to check, whether anything is (not) recognized as wrong.
