Can I create MText that is Formatted with bullets and/or numbering?

I was wondering if there was a way to create multi-line text like AutoCAD let's you do? So in AutoCAD, you can create text via the MTEXT and you can format the text with rows, columns, auto-adjust, manual, bullets, numbering and unlimited possibilities. But the guy I asked around in the office I just started in says he doesn't know how to do that and he just does his text via the regular text dialog where every time you hit return its its own single line, which is annoying if I am creating notes in a drawing and I have 85 notes and then the engineer removes a few, then I have to renumber and move everything every time. In AutoCAD I can just delete the notes and the numbering will adjust accordingly and I can move the columns and rows to fit my real estate. Thanks in advance.

I feel your pain, I found in v8i the text editor  quite clumsy and poorly documented in the help, especially the para and indenting I can make it work in MStn as is, after a fashion but never got the bullet point to auto number nor  to reset itself or renumber automatically, but my work around that always works is to open MS Word and do all the fancy text note bullet points and formatting  there but be careful your font needs to be as close to what you work in ms  as some things like bullet dots don't exist in all fonts.....  but with true type it works most often .....then copy paste it into the word processor , (you may need to mix fonts in the word processor to get the bullets right) ... and it works beautifully.. then I know for next time if I need to reformat ie remove a number midway I open text editor and  copy paste it back into word and do it there...

Not what you want to hear, I know,  but its a workaround that's quick and dirty but very easy and FAST.. and I never worked in 20 years in drafting  where they  don't  have MS office on every pc.. I read the html in the link provided for CE but IMHO it looks like it still hasn't improved or become easier the two little tabs are still there for line indent and para indent.. no mention of bullet points or auto numbering.. .so IMHO still sadly lagging even further  behind our cousins using ACAD Mtext  functionality.

  • Yes! Exactly. I recently switched companies and have been using AutoCAD for decades and now this company uses both as some jobs are required to be done and submitted in MicroStation. So it's a learning curve for me. I'm excited to learn the software, but get frustrated when I realize all the options I took for grant it with ACAD. Also, this company is using MicroStation V8i Select Series 4. Shouldn't they use a newer version. I feel like they should and i should ask them.

  • There is a newer version of MicroStation with CONNECT. However it's a significant learning curve from V8i, and it completely reworks how the software resources are configured. It's not a small step to upgrade to that.

It also was plagued by performance issues and bugs for far too long, so a lot of companies have held off until that was (mostly) sorted out.

You DO want to talk to your CAD manager or IT about the fact that Select Server (SS4) licensing will be taken offline at the end of the year. your licenses will need to be switched to node-locked licenses, or you will need to switch over to SS10 and the Enterprise licensing.

SS10 is SS4, with the new licensing instead of the old (not not a real update from where you are).

And I feel the same way about AutoCAD. I get so very frustrated at the things I can do without thinking in MicroStation that I can't do in AutoCAD without a lot of extra work (like placing a line that starts off perpendicular to an element, instead of being forced to end that way)

  • Happy to help!

Here's a link to a thread discussing the Select Server Sunset, in case you need to pass it along to folks in your company:

  • Welcome aboard Chis, you might want to look up in learn server MicroStation for autocad users its a bit old.. (even cheap ancient copies on Amazon for $1 used)... but  the learn server tutorial covers the major issues in getting your acad thinking over to Mstn thinking plus in help under autocad  there is a big list  of acad information to help..

For example you know the basic command for something is acad like explode but you've no idea the equivalent command in Mstn

Bentley  have given you the option to preface a keyin with DWG (space) and if you have your keyin or command window open you can see the list of acad common commands in the various columns, but if you select for example  explode or type DWG explode then  microstation interprets  what you want and launches the microstation  equivalent command and you get to see what it is so next time  or eventually  you become accustomed to use the microstation command or icon instead... this is such  a great feature that my acaders  transitioning to mstn really love using... other great  resources are Askinga lots of great tips and tricks in there .. and Jon Sumers  LA Solutions UK  has a website for vba programming  he generously  has many free tools that are great.

Another  great tip I try to teach my work newbies to get into right away so it becomes a habit is the Right Mouse Context Menu

just hover over an object don't click it wait until it highlights and then hold down the Right Mouse button and you'll get a menu of commands in words that are most common to your actual element type.. much quicker then finding the task icon or remember the commands etc .. will boost your productivity at least 20 percent...

also study in the help Accudraw and Accusnap  and Smart line working together to draw  you'll probably never use a construction line again.. if you force yourself for 2 weeks  you will love using these  for drawing.... its sort of a combo of acad ortho snaps and dynamic input drawing only improved even more... please reach out here and offline  or private message me and  I'd be glad to help you with issues and transitioning... hey I might even pick your brains for autocad stuff as now days we have to be able to be able to be functional in both packages  ...
