I have deleted my named boundaries but those boundaries are still tied to other sheets (so I still get the small magnifying glass around the boundaries that have been deleted)
I have no interest in maintaining the connection between this file (the one with the name boundaries) and whatever sheets they are "informing"
How can I remove that association and delete the magnifying glass?

When you removed the Named Boundaries did you also remove the associated Saved Views?
If you still have the Saved Views you should remove those as well.
You could also just turn off the display of the magnifying glass by turning off the Markers View Attribute.

Yes, this is the solution I used, turning off the Markers in View Attributes in the upper left hand corner.
