Backward compatible

Hello,

Are microstaton connect version 14 backwards compatible to microstation v8i ss4?

Thanks

  • the questionable is why you would need compatibility if that versions support is expiring...

  • the questionable

I think it's not questionable and the expiring support may be not treated as an issue:

I know users who still use e.g. V8.5 or even /J version. They have no problems, everything works still the same (typically their environment is pretty fixed), and they have no reason (often also have nobudget and/or management approval) to migrate.

Similarly there will be user who will use V8i for next 10 years. I can imagine e.g. because of project complexity and dependency on external applications, expected threats to change the version are just too high. I saw installations where to migrate requires to rewrite custom "connectors" to internal system, which is so risky and expensive, that it's simpler to stay on old version.

For me, in this context, it makes perfect sense to be aware of potential problems when DGN will be created in CE and read in V8i.

  • Honestly expired support doesn't much differ from "still supported". For example GeoWebPublisher was supported last 5 years without any updates and all multiple SR pending and no replacement product is provided it just expired one day and all change requests which "will be resolved in next versions" simply were put in garbage basket. Also we waited for PowerCivil for Baltics SS10 which was to be released(multiple SR requests) and didn't happen and now is replaced with product which no longer is based on Map platform. With such non-transparent support policy this really doesn't help. So without upgrading hardware or OS the expired support is not relevant just need to understand the consequences and do not upgrade computer without checking if it is supported on new hardware.

Good to have reminder that support is expiring as many can upgrade to newer versions at least SS10 but not everyone. At least receiving such message management can at last put it in budget.
