Microstation connect edition Extremely slow despite a rather simple object? am i doing something wrong or is the program just bad?

This is my first time working with the connectedition, before that I always used v8i. I'm about halfway through my project and can't go on, as even simply cutting two objects

can take up to 5 minutes, as the program freezes non-stop. I've already loaded an old, more complicated project which was created in

v8i without any problems, and it can be edited without any problems.
here are a few strange things that i noticed almost all layers seem to be in use having objects in them, although there is actually nothing in them? if you save the file as v7 (older version) and open it in v8i you don't get the objects, but only the lines and objects that were used for cutting and modeling,

although these were actually deleted. it is enough to move the mouse button over a line of an object to freeze the program for 30 seconds If you select an object with a mouse click, all previous operations (cutting, rounding, etc.) are displayed as small symbols. is that normal? does anyone know whether it is just very slow, or have I done something wrong, or selected wrong settings? I'm not very familiar with this program

  • Based on your responses I'm assume that you have MicroStation installed on your personal computer/laptop, not one provided by the school.

I would also venture to guess that your personal computer is a standard consumer class machine, not a more robust workstation class machine.

I had the same experience you describe on my personal home computer I bought off the shelf at my local Best Buy.

It meets the minimum specs to run MicroStation CONNECT, but is basically unusable due to the slowness and constant freezing. This is true even for the more recent versions of MicroStation CONNECT. MicroStation V8i SS10 runs on this same computer without issue.

Based on my experiences with my home computer I don't think upgrading to a later version of MicroStation CONNECT as others have suggested would do you any good. What would more likely solve your issue is to get a new workstation class computer to run it on. Unfortunately that's not an inexpensive solution either.

  • my computer is actually a very good one. problem might be that it only has 8gb of ram. bought some additional ram on amazon maybe it will run better then

  • To generalize, if it's slow all the time it would likely be hardware related. If it just gets slow occasionally or even locks at odd times, I'd guess it's something in Connects configuration.

  • Hi Janis,

a few more notes, because I strongly disagree with some advice and information presented in the discussion. Of course, as everything else, my opinions are subjective, on the other hand a few of them are based on facts ;-)

my computer is actually a very good one

I guess it is. You wrote the problem is overall slowness and simple graphics, so we do not discuss how to manage thousands complex 3D (parametric) elements or how to render very complex scene with millions of objects. So to think about "workstation PC" is just useless overkill. So if you have something like 8 GB RAM + 4 GB AMD R9 card + SSD, it's perfectly fine for any average project.

Of course, any HW configuration is always a subject of potential upgrade (e.g. 16 GB RAM is a standard today), but the problem is somewhere else in my opinion. The only my recommendation related to HW is to ensure all drivers are updated. Not only graphics card, but also motherboards chipset, SSD drivers etc. I remember my customer PC, where when these "low level drivers" were kept untouched from the time the computer was assembled (things like chipset drivers are typically not distributed through Windows updates) and when updated, it's leads to a substantial increase of stability and also performance.

    due to my schools license

The license is not directly related to a version installed. I recommend to ask whether Bentley academic program is active, because in such case upgrade should be possible.

so i probably just have to deal with it

It's a pity, because a difference between the first and current MicroStation version is huge. Even when it's still not as good as V8i was, when discussed stability, number of bugs and performance, especially latest versions brought many user-oriented performance enhancements. During the years from the first release, some internal parts were heavily optimized, so MicroStation today consumes less memory and is much more responsive (but, still many issues exist).

    With regards,

Jan's opinions are often much more informed that mine. HTH

Hmmm, thanks :-) But, in fact, it happens only as long as it's about "features and theory". Not so often, when there is a confrontation with every day engineering projects reality :-)
