I'm trying to use the "File Name" and "Print Date" text fields. I placed them in a sheet file. The file name populates correctly. However, the "print date" field does not update. How do I get that to update? How/when is this field populated?
This is probably not it, but have you printed the file recently?

Yes. I created a pdf using the pdf.pltcfg. It did not update in the resulting pdf. I wondered the same thing.
Lorys,
Your third paragraph exactly describes how my sheet border cells were set up in V8i. I think I will go back to that approach in ORD. FWIW, we never used tags in the past.
Thank you.
Just got a response from Bentley Support about the Date Plotted field not updating after printing.
The following variable must be set:MS_PLT_SET_LAST_PRINTED_TIME = 1
This variable is not part of the default MicroStation installation, you have to define it as a new variable.
Not sure why this isn't the default when installing MicroStation, but at least this gets it working.

Rod,
I got the same answer from Bentley yesterday as well.
This approach works if I want the date/time of the LAST time it printed. I was hoping the date/time would be updated at the time of printing, which would be more helpful. The $DATE$ and $TIME$ text substitutions work as I would expect, but that requires a pen table and the date/time displays as “$DATE$” and/or “$TIME$” in a dgn file. I am still able to use these for now.
I also received this suggestion from Bentley. I set this to 2, but I still can't make it update the date/time at the time of printing.
MS_PLT_UPDATE_FIELDS Update Fields when Printing Controls when fields are updated prior to printing or previewing. If set to 0 or undefined, fields are not updated prior to either printing or previewing. If set to 1, fields are updated prior to printing. If set to 2, fields are updated prior to both printing and previewing.
I had added an "IDEA" for date fields including a the issue at hand here. Maybe you want to vote for this.
