trouble editting datafields in cell

We are using Microstation Connect update 14 and we are having trouble editing 2 datafields in a cell.

The cell is a revision block cell and it has 2 datafields that are nested in the revision block cell.

In V8i we could right-click and it would jump to the next datafield for editting - in Connect, right clicking does nothing. There doesn't seem to be any way to toggle between the 2 datafields.

I opened a service request and it was immediately labeled as a defect and may be fixed in next version. Defect Report 1107554

Has anyone found any workarounds for this?

Thanks,

Regan

    Does a double-click do anything?

  • Hi Jon,

A double-click on the data field opens the edit data field but almost always on the 2 char  datafield, its very difficult to get to the single datafield for editting.328629-1-4.dgn

    I attached the DGN file.

When I double-click on any datafield the text editor pops.  I'm zoomed close in...

  • as you move your cursor over the data field you will see it switch between the two data fields being selected. When the one you want is highlighted , then select it.

Try moving your cursor back and forth along the data field and see the different ones highlight.

  • Tim,

I hover of each and when I get to the single data field, I double click and the 2 char df editor opens. Doesn't seem to be a way to always select the single field.

  • are you in the "edit data field" tool ? Don't double click - that assumes you are editing text.

If you don't know where the tool is - go to the search bar and keyin "data" you should see it in the list that pops up.

"fill in single enter data filed" is the tool.

  • I am using the enter data field tool and follow exactly your steps in the video. As I hover over the single field and select it it always goes to the double field. I tried 20 times and only one time I managed to get the single field.

  • as you move the cursor around over the data fields you should see the high light change. Don't just hover over and click, wait for the selection to change to the needed data field - shown in the video.

  • Hi RPJSMITH

Why still use data fields anyway? ( IMHO they are very much legacy left over)  why not just use real text . … ( full stops) if you want them to have attributes of the text style etc?

I believe that data fields were originally used instead of just text for two main reasons,

    1.  Way back in time you couldn't  edit plain text in a cell ( you can now days) and

     2. It was a very good way for  fast text incrementing the data fields once you knew the starting no. which may not be known until well   into  the project like column numbers...

IMHO if your using them in a title block for revisions then you would be better served by tags (V8i)  or items CE which can have text attributes  set colour, font etc even prepopulated ie Rev A, B, C etc but turned off and can be turned on and edited even through vba.and batch process multiple plans..or by hand one Title block or cell at a time...

Now as you have found they are very clumsy and awkward to use ... just like button up shoe lacing it worked but not efficient and no longer used much .. just  a few hold outs... but they will be saying that about me and tags v's items in CE.. haha!
