So because 8gb wasnt enough for microstation i upgraded my PC to 32 gb of ram to make it faster. but now microstation refuses to use more than 5gb even though its obviously lagging and loading forever. simple modelling operations still take up to 1 minute to complete all while its only using 5gb of the available 32. is there something i can do about that?
PS: i hope my pictures are understandable even though my PC settings are german
What it shows under Help-About Microstation?
But it won't use more RAM than you need. You could maybe try to attach large Reality models which could benefit from more RAM.
Looks like you are using the first Microstation CONNECT Edition version. There have been over a dozen new versions since then with exponential performance and bug fixes.
Can you try with the latest version?

I guess this your statement is based on this previous discussion. But nobody there told that 8 GBs are not enough: Some people said it's quite small amount, but not critical. My opinion was that it's acceptable and the real problem is somewhere else.

I think a majority of people agreed in the previous discussion that the main problem is you use very old version, that was slow.

It means the upgrade probably helps a bit, because OS kernel itself, system and application processes are not limited in memory, which makes the whole system faster.
But there is no simple equality between RAM and speed. Every application needs memory for itself and processed data, but not more. MicroStation (current version) reserves let's say 0.25 GB to start and initialize GUI. When simple DGN is opened, it can be 0.5 GB. More memory is allocated when bigger file is opened, but to allocate more memory than required cannot bring any performance benefit, because MicroStation cannot use such memory for any task.
The only special situation is rendering, where any amount memory is not enough.

As everybody told: Upgrade to the latest version (btw MicroStation CE U15 was released yesterday).
In the previous discussion it was mentioned you use school license. Did you check whether your school is a member of Academic program, so it's eligible to freely upgrade to new versions when they are released?

Jan
