Line Style not displaying correctly.

Please understand, I am VERY green when it comes to MicroStation in general and we are using Power Draft, and have only been using it for a few weeks. We were hired to revise an existing MicroStation project and we are learning as we go. I have hit a brick wall, and I am trying to figure out what our issue truly is. The project is a survey set and the symbolic line types are showing up as continuous lines. For example, the line indicating a fence consists of a long dash with an "X" and then a long dash again is displaying as a continuous line. There is various other lines as a long dash and double dot, and it is displaying continuous as well.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  • I think we might have found what was going on. This project is missing (2) .SHX files. We have requested them from the client and we will see if that fixes the problem. I'll update you all once I know more.

  • Guessing you're missing other files as well. SHX is usually an AutoDesk font file, sometimes part of a  GIS shapefile definition. Linestyles are often contained in RSC (resource) files for Bentley products. Select one of those lines and get the element information (Cntrl I) could give a clue.

  • Bob, Thank you so much for replying to my question. I did like you mentioned and I am providing a screenshot below. I am almost certain this will be a simple fix of some sort, I just don't know where to look. Any more help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

  • It is possible that those two SHX fonts are part of the AutoCAD linestyle. Do you have AutoCAD on your computer? If so, when you get a copy of the SHX files, just put them in the folder with all the rest of your AutoCAD fonts.

But there are a few other things that could make a linestyle appear solid when it does indeed have a style.

To start with (I don't think this is it, but always start with the basics!) LineStyle is also a View setting. Make sure that is turned on.

You can also look into what line style scale your drawings are using. This can be controlled through several factors.

    1.  Check your Model properties. There is a setting for Global Linestyle Scale. This can either follow your Annotation Scale, or be set to a number. To see if this is part of it, set your linestyle sale to NOT follow Annotation Scale, and play around with that global factor (I usually just run though 0.01, 1 and 100) to see if that makes any difference.
    2. See if that level has a linestyle scale factor set. You can find that by going into the Level Manager, selecting the level and right-clicking to get the Level Properties dialog. There are several tabs along the top, and the second one has an option to set a ByLevel linestyle scale.
    3. The element itself can also have a linestyle scale applied to it. You can find that by selecting the element and opening the Information/Properties dialog and scrolling through until you can find the Expanded grouping, and click the little plus next to the LineStyle Parameters.

It's also possible that the linestyle definition is stored in an RSC or DGNLIB file that you just don't have. It's very common for people to send out files without thinking about the workspace resources behind them. If that's the case, you might have to just request those files from the people who sent you the drawing.

  • Thank you MaryB,

I walked through the steps you provided. Here is my findings:

    1. Line Styles within the view settings is turned on.
    2. Adjusting the Global Linestyle Scale did not produce any changes.
    3. That level does have a linestyle scale factor set, please see the screenshot of the level manager.
    4.  Please see the provided screenshot in regards to the Linetype scale factors.
