rotate view by global Z axis and angle

I was given a microstation challenge and I'm stumped. Given a 3D view of arbitrary rotation, how do I rotate that view around global Z axis for certain degree? Special case would be starting at 1 isometric view, a 90 degree rotation around global Z axis would produce the other isometric views.

  • Maybe a simpler option may be to enable the View Rotation icon in you View and just use that?

  • MicroStation has about the worst view controls of any CAD software I've ever used. Why no a view rotation control cube? I challenge everyone at Bentley to find me a worse view controls UI. I mean look at SolidWorks, MeshMixer, or any AutoDesk product... we know you do some things extremely well but why deny us these small but meaningful quality of life improvements? This is the type of thing that makes me want to hunt for another software package. The view controls are fundamental to efficiency. Do better

  • Because fundamentally Microstation is 80ies product. Sometimes long development of software results in outdated UI.
Here you can vote at least for this enhancement - microstation.ideas.aha.io/.../MSR-I-1056

  • Thanks Oto. I was a bit more frustrated than I should have been by this. I'll make sure to cast my vote.

  • Although I haven't used Solidworks, the reason for the View Cube in Autodesk products has been because 3d orbit/rotate performance/redraw is so poor and they don't (all) have independent views and controls.

Although I agree it would enhance user experience, between accudraw and the view controls we have I understand why it hasn't been high on the list. Since we now have a ribbon, why not keep copying everyone else...

  • Hmm, that has not been my experience with Autodesk. Name a specific view angle and distance in 3D and I can get there with just a few clicks, then with one more click I can save said view, another and I can set it as a home view. Maybe things are different for me, I don't have Connect. I've been using v8i with the InRoads add on. My issue came when I Imported a lidar point cloud, I went to set my Title Block and drawing sheet up, and in order to maximize the use of said space I oriented the TB such that the point cloud fit nicely in its center. I didn't want to move the PC obviously because its all georef data, so I thought "I'll just change the view, or rotate view around the z axis" enter a multi step drop down menu process instead of a painless click click done moment. Additionally, having multiple view panes is handy sometimes, I agree with that. I just think this is one of a few simple quality of life changes that could really take MS into the 2020's. tbh I love MS and all it can do, it remains one of if not the only options capable of filling its roll. I just think constant improvement is the way of the world and B-MS could have a more optimized UI.
