Reference Bing Maps from Design Model into Sheet Model & Clip

I'm new to CONNECT Edition but have been playing around with the Bing Maps integration. In the Design Model I have set the Coordinate System and lined up my design with the aerial image as the client wants.

I'd now like to create a sheet model with location plan of the design with an aerial image. Is this possible?

I have referenced the Design Model into the sheet model, but cannot find any option to show the Bing Map.

If this isn't possible, is my best other option to add the image manually and clip as needed? I used to do this with the Google Maps tool but after reading on here about the integration not working in the current version (and not able to find the version that works), i'm not left with many options i think, but happy to take suggestions.

Using MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 15 (10.15.00.74)

Thanks!

  • How do you have the Bing Maps image attached to the Design Model?

    There are two methods:

    1. Open the View Attributes dialog and set the Background Map Type

This applies only to the active view window and is not carried over to any models that attach this model as a reference

    2. In Raster Manager

Using this attachment method the Bing Maps image is displayed in models that attach this model as a reference.

  • Thanks Rod.

I was Inserting as option 1 (View Attributes). Doing it via a Raster attachment is kind of what i was after, but is there a limitation on the amount of references with Raster maps that can be inserted?

I have attached the drawing as an example. I was hoping to get the smaller layout (to the right) to have the aerial image, clipped to the box and the layout to the left as is.

At the moment, i can see all of the raster references in the dialog, but it seems that only the first attachment will display, not the second despite how many views i select.

Is there something that i'm doing wrong?

  • From the file you attached it's hard to tell. It only has the bing map attachment.

I don't really think there is a limit to the number of raster attachments you can have (not one that you're likely to encounter). The raster images by default are opaque, so higher display order images will block out anything at a lower display order. This could by why you are only seeing one raster attachment.

You will need to do some adjustment to the raster display order. Not knowing what your other attachments look like and how they overlap, the bing map attachment should probably have the lowest display priority, then other attachments layered on top.

In order to clip the Bing Map image you will need to reference the model that has the image attached into another model and clip the reference. You cannot clip the Bing Map image directly in Raster Manager, or using the View Clip tool.

  • ok this inspired me to have ago myself..with Bing and  Connect

If I used the attached as raster direct into a drawing  it wont go to the back and  hides my text etc  no matter what I do and you can't  clip it.

If I use the view attribute option it goes to the back but again I can't clip it..

So I thought this is similar to ecw issues .. so I created a new file to hold the raster ref attachment ( default model) and treated this as airphoto holding  file xref.. and when I attached this xref file to drawings either model or sheet it worked GREAT !.... and I could clip by a drawn polygon .. so I assume you could attach this ref file as many times  as you want and  have different clip boundary polygons or maybe saved views might even be better....and different scales in the sheet model
