3 simple questions from an beginner about connect edition

So there a 3 things i couldnt really figure out. im using the first versoin of the connect edition btw.

1. can i use poly surfaces to model objects like cars like you usually would in blender or autocad? cutting cars out of solids seems like an unnecessary hard task

2. is there a tool like a mirror like for symmetric objects? so that you only have to model one side while already seeing the full object? also standard in blenxer and autocad

3.correct me if im wrong but microstation costs around 6000€ from what my teachers told me? is there a cheaper way to get it? through subscription or sharing licenses? as mentioned before my school uses the first version of connect and refuses to upgrade it for free for some reason and for more complex projects its full of bugs and lags and overall just too slow to be efficient. i really like microstation and i dont want to switch completly to autocad.

if someone could help me out i would really appreciate that;)

  • first - the newer version of CONNECT is far less buggy (update 15).

    1. there are surfacing tools in MicroStation. Make sure you are in a 3D file (if not the tools will not be available). In the upper left - switch the workflow from Drawing to Modeling. You will then see the mesh tools tab, surfaces tab. Hopefully that will get you started.

    2. I believe the basic mirroring tool should work on the surfaces, etc... Drawing workflow>home tab>manipulate group>mirror icon (or type mirror in the search bar - in the upper right).

    3. Not sure on a cheaper way to get it.

  • this helped me a lot thanxxx!

and yea i know its better but my teacher clams 10 has always worked and theres no reason to update even though its free.... but i guess thats how it is

  • MicroStation costs around 6000€ from what my teachers told me

That's your local price to a commercial customer.

Is there a cheaper way to get it?

While I don't speak for Bentley Systems, I believe that your school qualifies for academic licensing.  Depending what country you're in (somewhere in the EU), the academic license is low-cost or free.

What I can't tell you is whether, as a student of a licensed school, you can obtain a student license under the same deal.  You should contact the local Bentley office in your country.

My teacher claims 10 has always worked and theres no reason to update

MicroStation CONNECT was release commercially in 2015.  It has evolved to Update 15 at the time of writing (Jan 2021).  That evolution has produced more functionality, better performance, and innumerable bug fixes.

  • 1. MicroStation can supports Solid modelling, Surface (NURBS) modelling, and simple Mesh Modelling, with some interaction between these methods where applicable. What it does not have is (which would be nice) is sub-division m3esh modelling, which is a popular method to approximate surfaces in other applications.

    2. Mirrored (or any arbitrarily rotated) replication is easy to achieve by using MicroStation's ability to "Self reference" the model you are currently working. As you add items the referenced info is updated.

    3. As Jon mentions Bentley supply free academic licenses if you can supply academic credentials eg. an academic email
