I am looking for some ideas for sheet number automation. We currently do not use paper space models in our sheet drawings. Most of the data shown in our sheet drawings are from reference files. We have separate dgn files that contain our border cells, plan border, cross section border, profile border, etc. The border dgns are referenced in as well. With only 5 or 6 border dgns for each project, we can edit the type, year, and project no. in those 5 or 6 files that in-turn updates the entire project.
The Type, Year, and Project No. text is edited in the border cell in the border dgn. They are consistent through out the project. The Sheet No. is text that is placed in the sheet drawing when created using GeoPak.
The match line text is also placed in the sheet when created using GeoPak. There are times where this match line text is a cell that contains the information shown.
The "XX" would need to be alphanumeric. Sheet number examples, 2, 2-1, 2-2, 2B, 2B1, 2B2, 3, 3A, 3B, and so on for other sheets. If we have to insert a sheet in the middle of other sheets, the trailing sheet numbers would have to be updated. Small projects are not so much of a problem, it's the larger projects that create issues. We have some larger projects that have upwards of 1000 sheets in the entire project. Hence the need for sheet number automation.
I have looked at pen tables to handle this. That creates a problem. The string used in the pen table will be shown until it is printed. The sheet numbers needs to be displayed in the sheet drawing. Another avenue would be to have the sheet number based off the model name. That creates a problem as well. That would be against Cadd Standards. I've looked at other ways but with no success.
Any ideas and input are welcome. Thanks in advance!
In V8i use a title block model space xref with two models one with the standard title block line work and headings logo etc only then in a sub model you create / attach tags and stt these to true scale, fonts levels colour etc.. then Ref attach the titleblock or cell model xref and use copy nest and then merge the tag set.. then for bulk changes or populating the tags you export these via vba programming in and out of say excel .
Now you can BUY of the shelf for La Solutions (UK) has Flexitable to do this or Caddpro (title block / tag manager) from Adam Lambert (Aus) you can see demo on youtube of Caddpro title block manager...FYI Adam is a person friend but I get no financial rewards or kick backs for promoting his product but I have first hand knowledge of how good/ easy to use it is as I use it everyday in my work with dgn files and I also use it managing the workspace standards.
Also Axiom have one too but it is IMHO is relatively very expensive but that said its very good and they have goodtech maint help support...which I have used at one of the places I've worked before.. but I prefer Caddpro suite as Adam is also an Aussie like me...

As support for MicroStation V8i SS2 has now been discontinued it might be worth considering upgrading to the latest CONNECT version which includes the Sheet Index feature. This helps to automate the workflow you are outlining here and might be worth looking at if it is something new that you are looking to implement.

Lorys: Thanks for your input. I've seen those pieces of software suggested in other forum posts. I'll check out the prices and go from there.

Andrew: Thanks for your input. I agree it will be worth upgrading to the latest Connect version, but we are tied to V8i until TDOT implements their configuration and makes the switch. All of our old jobs will stay in V8i so I've got to deal with what I've got.
Thanks for your responses.
FYI V8i ss10 is still supported, but eventually we will all be forced to use CE..
Now fortunately Flexitable by LA Solutions (UK) and Caddpro still work with both V8i and CE, so you can use best of both worlds for old and new work

Lorys: Thanks for the info. Our firm is stuck with V8i SS2 until the DOT implements ORD. I would love to be able to upgrade now and utilize the enhanced features that SS10 and even ORD offers. As it stands right now, it will be July of this year before I can start to utilize ORD, surveys only for now. I will discuss the application costs of Flexitable and Caddpro with the folks that have the ability to make purchase decisions before I can utilize LA Solutions or CaddPro's applications. In the mean time, I have quite a few projects that will most likely stay in V8i and not be upgraded to ORD. Time will tell. Thanks again.
