How to Create Text Variable & Show the Defined Value Against 3D Element

Hello All,

In MS CE, we do have flexibility to create variables and assign those variable against 3D element as shown below.

Notice that Length A variable is created on the steel shape the details can be assigned for Distance property as highlighted.

In the same fashion, is it possible to add a text type variable and enlist under some property so that when I can perform Properties i can enlist the same against any property under Geometry or any category?

I tried creating item set & attaching to the parametric cel. But when I insert this cel into model file, I can't see the details for item type only Distance Property (variables) can be seen.

Any suggestion will be a great help here.

Thank you

  • Hi Deepak,

We can create Text Variable, please refer to below screenshot. Just make sure you select Text as Type value when you create Local Text or Item type variables. You will be able to see the text variable in Parametric cell properties after placing it as cell.

  • But how do we use that variable to change the text inside of the cell? When I go to place the text in the cell and select placeholder cell properties, that property is not visible to me to select.

  • Hi RFujan,

If your text variable is created in a parametric model, after place this model as parametric cell, the text variable will display in Properties.

  • That isn't the answer to the question I am asking. How do we get the text to show up and change in the Parametric cell? i.e. I have a manhole cover that has a letter "S" in it to signify it is sanitary, or change to "E" for electrical? I want to know how to display that variable in the cells graphics, not in just its properties.

  • Great question RFujan,

never thought of the idea, but it could be quite handy to do it like you explained it in your example.

First thought of mine was: Must be possible, by linking text to the model properties of the parametric cell, but unfortunately the variables do not show up in the model properties when you want to link a textfield to them. I can link to all kind of properties from the model, but the variables are not there, unfortunately. (Although you can find them in the properties dialog, when you just take a look at it. But they are missing when choosing "model properties" to insert in a field.)

And when trying to do it with a nested cell, the text field cannot read the value of the textvariable and only shows "####" as the preview value and nothing happens when you try to link it.

Would be nice if one could readout the variables of the parametric cell and use them in text fields with linked texts via "insert field" in text editor.
