Extracting Tag Information from References

Hello All - I am a fairly new MicroStation CAD admin and need some guidance for an ask I've been given.

Is there a way to extract tag information from tags belonging to a reference in a file? For example, I have DGN A that contains a reference to DGN B. I can extract, view, and edit tags in DGN B since it's the source and that's where the tags live, but I cannot seem to even view the tag information from DGN A that contains the reference to DGN B.

  • Can you walk us through which tools you are using, and what you are trying to achieve? Also, which version of MicroStation are you using? There have been at least a dozen releases of Connect alone, and I know there have been many bug fixes (and accidentally broken tools) along the way.

  • Hi MaryB. I am currently using MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 (10.14.0.109). Our previous CAD admin for MicroStation had built a custom VBA interface that lets users edit tags found on our borders within a particular tag set named "TBSTDTAGS". After the tags are set, we use the key-in "titleblock updatedms" to push them to ProjectWise.

This process works fine if the border cell itself, which contains the tags, is in the actual  source file I run the tool in. When I attempt to run the same tool, it cannot find any tags and I believe it's because the tool was not designed to read tags from references. I'm just trying to use out-of-the-box Microstation functions to read the tags from a reference and once I know I can do that, I was going to attempt to mimic it via VBA so I can read tags off references.

  • I believe there have been some changes between Connect and V8i, so your VBA may need to be edited/rewritten. It may be that refefence models need to be collected and iterated...but I don't know specifics.

You also mention ProjectWise, which is an entirely different animal, and brings its own complications to the party. I believe ProjectWise actually has a process to push tag information out to drawings...but again, I don't know specifics.

Are you trying to edit tags in one drawing (your border) from within another drawing (your sheet)? Wouldn't that affect any sheet that uses that border? Or are you just trying to read the tag information from your border? I'm trying to understand the workflow.

  • if you are in CE you should, as well as in V8i.The Tags functions are only availabel through the "Toolbox"-Dialog.

If you can do it in File B then you should be able to at least review the attached tags - if e.g. the reference locate is switched off you can not do anything with the reference -  (forgive the localized GUI)

The first screenshot shows a element on a referenced file.

if the localize is switched off though it will tell you that the element is on a reference with localize off.

You can also see the linked elements (Tags) through the properties of the polygon (right mouseclick)

  • Reading thru this thread - I am confused.

from the description of the VBA  - it looks like it allows the user to edit tags.

so are you looking for the ability to edit a tag that is in a referenced file ?
