I received a file from a client with the sheet border they wish us to use on our project.
One model, One border consisting of 96 elements:2 Cells24 Lines5 Line Strings3 Raster Attachments (not large, used on other projects without issue)11 Shapes2 Shared Cells (same definition)41 Text5 Text Nodes1 Cell
There does not appear to be Design History on this file. All levels are turned on (view and globally) and "thawed". "Fit All" does not show any elements beyond the visible elements.
Yet this file is over 14Mb in size. I have tried compressing it, and there is no change.
What on earth could make an (apparently) simple file so massive? I'd attach it so you folks could look at it, but 14 Mb is too large to attach...I will be filing a Service ticket about this, but I thought I would pick your magnificent minds for ideas I might have overlooked.
Mary.
Can you check the patterning. I have found this to be a major issue with file size?
Ian
As far as I can tell, there is no patterning. Nothing is visible in the file and nothing shows up in the element information dialog. Is there any other way I can check for patterns?

I've seen files like that. My answer is to create a new dgn file, attach the big file as a reference, then merge into master.
That typically leaves all of the other baggage behind.

Merge into master is evil. Best is to use Fence copy as merge also merges shared cell definitions, linestyles, text, dimension styles and lots of other garbage.
Large file size could be also because of big shared cell definition.
Hi Mary,
it's hard to say, but there is plenty of data that can be hidden and maybe in a state that cannot be reached by normal user tools.
Do you know anything how it was created (DWG, some MicroStation application...?) and whether any advanced features like cached visible edges were used?
If you are interested in, I can check quickly (over the weekend at the worst case).
With regards,
Jan
