Can vertices be add to a reference boundary? the clip boundaries were added using a refence file. searched for a way to do this, but could not find one. using the insert vertex tool and get element is not valid for this tool

Depends on how the clip was created. If you clipped using a fence/points you'll need to draw a new boundary and apply it as the clip.
-B
* If you clipped by an element in the reference file, you should only need to activate or switch into the reference to modify the clip shape...

We draw reference boundaries on a level that doesn't print so we can insert vertices as needed (edit: unnecessary, Barry is right - and then just renew the boundary in the reference manager.)
I use xref file for clip boundary for all my work it is a specific level and a proper closed shape not lines, I can insert vertices etc and it changes the shape... but it has to be a polygon..
And in the active drawing I clip boundary xref by element... if it changes ( not a nested file) so I select all the xref s and clip boundary and select the shape in my boundary xref... if doesnt update I just reclip .. but it should work without reclip ... maybe its nested ..Mst with nested files doesn't like changes

It sounds like you are using a shape/complex shape (which I do as well) but you shouldn't have to do anything with the reference manager after editing the boundary (at least, I certainly don't have to after once the shape is initially assigned for the fence source element).
You're so right, Barry. No need to do anything in reference manager, I got confused. Of course we're using polygons, too, but not in a separate xref file yet as suggested by Lorys. But that could be useful in some projects, thanks for the idea.
