Hello,
Why is it when I place a line 25.00 ft it shows 25:00.00 and how can I fix this?

open design file settings set your units to feet decimal units and in the read out set to 2 or as many as you want decimal places right now it looks like
ft : inches :sub inches.. thank God were decimal just meters decimal 3 places or mm 1 decimal place

Oops, I missed that attachment.
Steve Smith said:that I would like to have my working units setup per the .docs attached in the previous post.
In your file, the format is set to MU:SU (master units : sub units), so MicroStation shows the value as 25:00.
Steve Smith said:Once you help me get this file setup correctly
To change it to MU and to save settings (in V8i it is File > Save settings) should be enough.
Steve Smith said:I would like to know where to place the file so when I want to create a new dgn drawing it will use this file with the correct units.
The solution depends whether you are able to modify the used workspace:
But it's not mandatory, because when a new file is created, in the dialog also an option to define seed file is available, so it can be selected manually:
Steve Smith said:I guess the additional lines in the blank dgn needs to be deleted in order for it be used when creating a new dgn drawing.
Yes, because the seed file is copied 1:1 and (only) renamed to have a name of the new file.
Steve Smith said:This setup for Microstation is complex and difficult even after reading all the help stuff.
I disagree. MicroStation setup is well structured in logical manner, and has not changed for at least 30 years ;-)
The problem is that it's extremely flexible, so it can easily looks like weird magic. But it's not.
When you feel so, I think you did not pass the right training .. but, at the same time, I must admit that I do not know any really good, publicly available, introduction to MicroStation configuration. On the other hand, how it's described in MicroStation CONNECT Edition documentation, is in my opinion much better than it was in V8i doc.
With regards,

I don't appreciate your comment I I think you did not pass the right training. You don't know what specific training was offered or not so please keep your unprofessional comment to yourself. Remember this is a place to ask other customers for help regardless if a person is a export or a person learning this stuff people need to respond and help in a professional way.
Can you attach the new seed file with the correct working units that I want per my .doc.
Apologies if you found Jan Šlegr's post upsetting. I do not think he meant offence. What I think he is saying is that if you wanted to have any of your files created with the correct Working Units that you need to create your own template, or seed DGN file, with the required settings. Once created you place this at your workspace's defined location using the suggested configuration variables.
That way, in the future any new DGN file you create has these Working Units defined. The following Youtube video should be of assistance in explaining how this can be achieved.

Exactly. The only thing I wrote, and I see no reason to change it (even when anybody can have different experience of course), is that when MicroStation configuration is seen as difficult (which is what was mentioned), it's about to find and pass the right training.
I guess it has been valid for all these (over) 30 years I work with MicroStation ;-)
Andrew Bell said:What I think he is saying
I think I answered or at least touch all questions asked: Why the value is displayed as MU:SU, where it can be changed, what to do to save this configuration to be persistent and I also described two ways how to use such file as seed (using variables and manually). Is there anything more?
In the situations, when the whole answer is about emotions, and there is no reaction whether changes were tested and whether it works or not, I do not see a way how to continue in this discussion, because there is no new information that can be analyzed.

We'll mostly we are a collection of fellow users at least and Jan can come across a bit harsh but I want to believe its his use of written English ..
I don't believe he is a native speaker even though he comes over very technically correct english.
Jan has been an enormous contributor here over the years and has been a great help to many of us fellow users me included, in particular he is fabulous at VBA.. in any case the settings of your units and read out is microstation training 101 first day first hour .. if it wasn't then you have been done a disservice by your trainer / mentor..
No matter just edit your files design file settings as has been described in the settings not advanced... in units accuracy you don't want too many decimal places if you want it to read 00:00 feet ( survey feet) sorry we metric users don't really understand ft and survey feet.. then make sure nothing is in your file delete and use compress to delete un-used levels then save it with a logical name like USFTSeed.dgn make sure other fellow workers can find this file and set it in your workspace or just remember where , and when you need to you do a "new file "drill to this and then mstn will remember it as long as you never use a different one .. this seed file is your new file template so to speak...
