Hello,
As a former AutoCAD user, I like being able to use the Escape key to end the current command. I already know how to allow this in Workspace>Preferences>Input.
I have also played around a bit with button assignments and can see how that works.
What I cannot see, however, is a way of assigning the Escape key to a mouse button, so that I can use a side button to end a command. Does anyone know if this is possible? I'm using V8i.
Thanks for your help.
Robert
Does your mouse driver allow for custom defined mouse buttons? If so, you may be able to do it there.
Mine does (Evoluent Vertical Mouse) and I have my two thumb buttons set up as ESC and ENTER. It makes AutoCAD much easier and it does help with Microstation as well. Not every mouse will allow that, but it'sa nice when they do.

Hi Mary,
Yes that is exactly what I am looking to do! My mouse is simply a Plug and Play, with no specific driver installed.
I guess I'll have to give up on this seemingly simple plan. :-)
what ESC does (for me) is that Element Selection is activated. Why not assign the keyin "choose element" to the extra button (or button combination) on your mouse? Works for me through the Button assignments [Remap Buttons]
You could also assign "null" - whatever the worth of that may be though.

Yes! that's the way! Thank you, Gerd. By assigning "choose none" to the required button, it has the same result as the ESC key.
Just for the sake of the very detail...
In MicroStation ESC does not release the selected elements. It only calls "Choose element". The selection set is still active.
In AutoCad ESC probably does release the selection though(? not keen to try now). So if you want that "Choose none" is it.
Hi Ryan
Alternative set your F1 key or F 12 key to choose none or if you have multi mouse set one of the xtra buttons to choose none..
and set the escape key activated ed in you prefs as a fail safe
I use to have an extra thumb button and I did the choose none to the xra button, but now I only have a 3 button scroll mouse
So I set
LMB to data
RMB to Reset
Cord L& R button to Fit view as I use that alot
Middle button to Tentative I use that a lot too but you could change either the cord or middle to "choose none" and that would let you achieve your fake acad escape or any combo of the above to suit your needs.. oops that has already been suggested oh well
good for others with similar issue fora fuller description and options ....
Remember not everything in acad can be simulated in msnt they are both cad but work fundamentally differently.
Keep posting.. its good for us here to challenge our thinking outside our everyday usages...

Hi Lorys,
Yes, this is what I did too. I have six buttons on my mouse and I set the Select None command to an extra button. I was initially unaware of the key-in equivalent to the escape key, which is activated in preferences, to be able to assign it to a key, but everyone here has been very helpful.
Thanks,
