Can I assign the Escape key to a mouse button?

Hello,

As a former AutoCAD user, I like being able to use the Escape key to end the current command. I already know how to allow this in Workspace>Preferences>Input.

I have also played around a bit with button assignments and can see how that works.

What I cannot see, however, is a way of assigning the Escape key to a mouse button, so that I can use a side button to end a command. Does anyone know if this is possible? I'm using V8i.

Thanks for your help.

  • What do you need the esc key to perform that the right-click (reset) button does not do?

  • The right click, reset button keeps the current command active. I like to have no command active when in between commands. Comes from being an AutoCAD user first and foremost, I guess.

  • But MicroStation does not have "recent commands" as AutoCAD has. I am also a former AutoCAD user and I prefer the behaviour as usual.

The most annoying for me is that ESC key does not unselect all as AutoCAD does with ESC key so I use CHOOSE NONE Keyin in F1 key.

  • MicroStation does not have "recent commands"

Sure it does.  MicroStation's command window expands to show a list of recent key-ins.  Pressing the keyboard up-arrow and down-arrow scrolls through those key-ins.

  • Yes, but if you press the "Place Smartline" button its key-in(command) is not added in the key-in window just if you type a key-in...

  • Ok, so change the key-in string to "reset, choose element;select none;null". This will initiate the Element Selection tool to clear anything selected.

Just noticed there is also a key-in "nocommand" ("reset, choose element;select none;nocommand") that seems to be the same as "null".

I'm not sure about the "recent commands" other than with the key-in browser where you can use the up/down arrow keys to recall key-ins. Maybe you can post that in the Ideas Forum. If there is enough support Bentley will consider adding it. In v8i I was pretty much only using keyboard mapping for all my commands so I had no need for "recent commands" as it is quicker to hit 2 keys to call up a tool. CONNECT has the same ability. There are many dual platform users here that would probably welcome the recent commands ability.

Jon, I think the poster is referring to what I would say is similar to the Message Center in Microstation. I don't know how familiar you are with AutoCAD, but where the Message Center is located in Microstation, AutoCAD has a command line "center" so you can type in commands and all tools you use are part of that running list. You can use the arrow keys to scroll through the list to recall anything. As far as I am aware Microstation does not have that same ability, other than what you mention about the key-in browser. The key-in browser only logs the key-ins used. It does not contain a list of tools initiated by the icons or popup menus.

I may be off with this. It's been many, many years since I've worked with AutoCAD other than one custom program we have to calculate cross section areas.

  • where the Message Center is located in Microstation, AutoCAD has a command line "center"

MicroStation's Message Center is just that: a window that displays messages.  The Message Center is not the key-in window...

    Key-In Window

The key-in window is usually collapsed, but when expanded displays a list of recent key-in commands.  Commands are available to re-use...

    • Click a recent command in the list to copy it to the key-in text box
    • Use the up-arrow and down-arrow keys to scroll through the list

Hit Return to queue the command in the text box.  Double-click a command in the list to invoke it.

  • Yes, that's what I was trying to explain. The AutoCAD command line is like a hybrid og Microstation's Message Center & key-in browser combined. It is also displayed in the lower application window (same as Microstation's Message Center). It provides messages as you are working and logs all tools (whether entered in the command line or activated by an icon, etc). If you want to recall a previously used command you just scroll to it through the command line.

Microstation does not have that same functionality as far as I am aware. The key-in browser only gives you access to the key-ns used, not tools activated by an icon or popup menu.

The screenshot shows the AutoCAD command line (expanded to show the entire log) and what it contains. You can see I loaded a lisp routine (similar to mdl) and ran it. If I want to run that routine again I can just scroll up to it and hit enter.

Second screenshot I used the place line & place circle command to place elements using the icons. Those are logged. I know some old school AutoCAD users who never really used the mouse because they could type in and recall everything easily.

  • Hmmmm. I just saw another post this morning that was asking if a user can enable the Command Window in CONNECT as you are able to in SS 10 (and I discovered SS 2). The variable is MS_USECOMMANDWINDOW and it displays a dialog that locks the product in this window rather than the status bar interface. This command window still does not function like the AutoCAD command line. The Microstation Command windows shows the Active command, Active level, current tool, and other information depending on which tool is active as well as the instructions for what action the tool is needing from the user.

It odes not keep a running list of the icons being used, just a list of the items entered into the command line. It's sort of like a hybrid of the key-in browser command line & the statues bar.

I just wanted to mention this hear because I commented that Microstation does not have a command line similar to AutoCAD. This is a correction to that statement, although the Microstation Command window does not have the same functionality as I believe others would like.

It is a good reference for the Ideas forum if someone wants to create that idea.
