I have created a template in a dgnlib file to pattern 3d sections. It works, but I have to assign the template using element id.
that's a pain.
How can this be automated? I want to pick the template, create the 3d elements and sections and then the sections are patterned
Not sure whether this is what you're looking for but here is a blog explaining how to use hatch / pattern in Dynamic View sections.

Thank Andrew I have tried it this way ,but it is not working. it is not assigning the template to the element. I have to go into Element Information and add the template to the geometry. Also, the pattern is not showing up in the model. It only shows up in the sheet and drawing. I screwed something up

I've just spent the best part of an hour wresting with your dgnlib and Element Templates in general. Again, its not a feature I use as my experience with ET's leave me feeling that it has a somewhat flaky implementation and you have to jump through so many hoops just to get it working. Although I could get the patterns to appear in your dgnlib, I couldnt get them working in my test file with some simple solid blocks for ages. I eventually got it working by adjusting the Cut Plane display style settings; especially Treat Open Elements as Edges which should be enabled. The IsAnnotation property in the templates was also causing issues so I set all to none. Revit does this soooooo much better.
