I have 2 referencefiles attached to my drawing. I then get the message that Large level name directories were encountered and Microstation crashes when I try to draw. If I remove the references then there are no problems.Compressions did not fix the problem. Are there any other solutions?

What is the exact version no. (e.g. v10.x.y.z) of MicroStation that you are using? Use key-in VERSION to see the version no. in the MicroStation Message Center, or Help→About MicroStation in the backstage.
VERSION
See this blog that shows you how to obtain MicroStation's version number.

When you look at the references, how many levels are defined? Are any levels coming from a DGNLIB, and if so, how many are those?
I have never see "Large Level name directories" crash Microstation, but I imagine anything is possible.

I have seen the warning many times before ( I have lots of levels in my dgnlib from our local DoT but it never crashed microstation on me ... It maybe runs a little slower to refresh or load a reference attachment but not really noticeable so I ignore it.. but I always wondered if I needed to do anything about it..

This is a common message since CONNECT was released. This issue was always there in V8, but CONNECT has exposed it.
You need to run the COMPRESS option for your levels on the file. It will also reduce the file size, which is an added bonus.
