I hope someone can help me out. I want to set my aerial image to background in a dwg and save it in that setting.
So to explain, in a dgn I attach an aerial image in raster manager, under properties, display print, plane, the setting is background. So all my line drawings sit on top of the aerial image.
In a dwg I attach an aerial image in raster manager, under properties, display print, plane, the setting is design. I can change this to background but it wont save in background and every time microstation auto saves it goes back to design and my line drawings are now in the background.
I'm attaching the same aerial image from the same folder into the dgn and dwg.
I would like to have the default in dwg to background. Can anyone help?
It's possible that DWG stores raster files differently, and may not have a "background" setting. DWG file format is different from DGN, and not everything is possible.
All DWG files are 3D if I remember correctly. You should be able to move your raster image down (Z direction) to something like -1000 or so and it will show "beneath" your linework.

Hi MaryB, thanks for your response. I have attached 2 screenshots to show the default setting (design) and the option of background.
Unfortunately microstation won’t save the new setting when closing, or when choosing save settings or when auto save saves.

What about you create a separate DWG file to hold the raster then attach this file as an xref file and then you should be able to order the active and the xref just like in msnt xref manager..

I believe that, if the file is a DWG file, those options are not savable because they are not part of the DWG format. You can use them while the file is open, but you cannot save them into the file. DWG format does not have that option available and has nowhere to save it.
There are settings that MicroStation has that DWG simply does not. We can access them because the tools exist in MicroStation, but they cannot be saved to a file format that literally does not have that structure.

What about a holding DWG file for image and attach as an xref, even autocad should allow ordering of the xrefs...
Thank you, Lory and MaryB,
That’s pretty much what I have been doing. I thought there might be a setting that would eliminate that extra step. Thanks for your input it’s appreciated.
