MicroStation Alert message - Connection was lost

I am using MicroStation Connect 16 and just recently I am receiving an alert message as follows: Unable to save design file. Most likely, network connection was lost. Do you want to Retry? I always select OK but this never works to save the file. MicroStation all ways wants to abort. The odd thing is I am working off my computer's internal drive and get this message frequently. However, when I am working off the company network file storage, I noticed that I do not receive this alert message and the file saves without any issues. I was thinking the issue could stem from a newly upgraded 1 TB SSD that I had IT put on recently because since then I have been receiving these alert messages while using the computer's internal drive using MicroStation. But when I am using AutoCAD 2020 or other software programs I do not experience any file saving issues. Only have experience in using MicroStation Connect while saving to the computer's internal drive. Has anyone else experienced this issue recently or in the past and what solution was realized. Is there some setting in MicroStation that I am unware about that could help this issue? It is necessary for me to work on file off my computer hard drive often and submit back onto the company's network storage. Since this issue now occurs, it has become most annoying and my productivity level is compromised.

Thanks for you advice.

  • Does the folder on local drive is synchronized on any of cloud storages? Any antivirus installed?

  • The reason you may not see this error with other software is that other software does not save continuously. MicroStation, by default, does. I have no technical knowledge to hazard any guess why the new hardware could be causing a problem...

You may be able to try changing your user preferences to NOT save automatically which would make MicroStation perform more like your other software. You would need to remember to save your changes manually. I believe this setting can be found in your Preferences, under Operation, where you can uncheck "Automatically save Design Changes". You will need to restart MicroStation for this change to take effect.

While this doesn't exactly solve whatever problem you are having, it may allow you to work without losing your files.

  • How are your files stored on your local drive? Are you storing them in One Drive or some other storage that is synched to something else? A new hard drive/SSD should not have anything to do with the message you receive. It seems obvious that the Microstation is saving the file to a location where there is some type of synching to a location that requires an internet or network connection to be active.

It is possible that when you download files, if all of the refence files are not copied down then Microstation is looking to the original location (assuming you have an active connection back to the source and the reference paths are not broken). It's hard to say without knowing your workflow from the point you download the file.

    Microstation CONNECT - 10.17.2.61

    ORD - 2021 R1 10.10.1.3

    ORD 2022 R1.1 - 10.11.3.2

    ORD 2022 R3 -  10.12.2.4

    Microstation v8i SS 10 - 08.11.09.919

    Power InRoads v8i - 08.11.09.615

  • Very good point about the reference files. Even if the active file has been downloaded, the references may still be accessed over a network. I've had that discussion with coworkers when, due to connectivity issues, they copied files to their local drive, but didn't grab all the references.

  • Thanks MaryB

Yes I have MicroStation set to auto save design changes and assuming this means it saves continuously, there should be at least some work that had been saved before I receive the Alert message, but no, all work not saved. Excel I use auto save and I believe that is continuous saving.  Also, even with this MicroStation auto setting while working in an AutoCAD file format, I get an alert to save periodically and this is where I get the alert that connection was lost when I proceed to save. I am working off the internal computer file storage not a network for cloud based storage.
