Enter Data Field

With the new connect version (instead of v8i) why does it change the attributes of the Enter Data Field text and how do I stop it?  In the old version, just click on the Enter Data Field, change your text, hit Enter, move on to next Data field.  NOW, it changes the color of the text to some random color, not the current active color.  So I have to fidget and fuss with it for a while to finally get it back to the original color.  So far no one surefire method has worked for me in changing it back.  Good thing is, I haven't deleted v8i yet, so I can go back to it and get my Data Fields changed properly.

  • Hi,

    I was told that adding the configuration variable
    _USTN_RESET_EDF_COLOR_TO_MATCH_ADJOINING_TEXT=true
    was a permanent fix.  It wasn't too long ago that I complained about that and someone said that this is a temporary fix and that a fix without the configuration variable will eventually be released.  In the mean time, you can add this variable and see if it helps.

    Drat! you  just extended the life of data fields another 25 years just when we were starting to convince people to stop using them.. you just had to go and tell them the dirty little secret how to keep them going didn't you?

    Hi Lorys,

    I keep trying to find the best tool to replace enter data fields to do the simple things we want...  So far no one has been able to point me to a better function.  All I want is a place holder for the user to manually enter text (especially with the the auto-fill command)--which is exactly the enter data fields do.

    Regardless of age, regardless of the cool-factor, regardless of desire, it comes back down to using the best tool for the job.  If enter data fields is still the best tool, we need to keep using it, and Bentley needs to not break it.

  • ok but  how do you actually use them..can you give a visual example..  and when would you use the Autofill ?

    My limited experience is Wiring schematics that others had build with EDFs already populated  and i just need to add more wiring lines and text and cells and  just edit whats already there?

    If its for grid a -z  and column  or row 1 to 100  for pier or column placement somebody made an excellent  free macro in this forum to do just that increment text as  a b c etc for grid lines and I think it made the bubbles and the grid lines too.. but I'm a infrastructure roads civil type so I never use the architectural grid numbering thingey.. I'd really be interested in your workflow .. I might learn something even though been using  microstation forever in many different  job roles.... electrical, mechanical, gis utilities mapping , survey drafting  and even desk top publishing for technical manuals like user manual for motor cars... ( used corel draw and microstation)...

  • Hi Lorys,

    Here is a screen shot of one of my working drawings.  This is wood framed pool accessory building.  I have used a blue (MS Paint) pen to circle the detail reference numbers.  All of these start off as empty enter-data-fields in cells.  We place the cells and then fill in the number manually.  The sheet number below the detail reference number is also an enter-data-field.  With that one, I have a vba routine that will fill it in (or update it), based upon the detail reference number.

    Being that often these details are the standard numbers (that everyone in our office has mostly memorized due to extensive usage), we often place the indicator cells, then use the auto-fill enter-data-field tool to enter in the numbers that we know by heart.  Once these numbers are entered, they never change.  Also the sheet number never changes.  (If it does, it's a one-second vba routine to fix it.)  IE, I'm trying to say that this information is not dynamic.  You enter it once, and it is set.

    FYI, I picked a very small project to allow for a better screen shot.  Most of our plans have a lot more enter-data-fields.

    --Thanks,
