[CE 15.1] Text/Dimension style changes

Hello All,

I'm fairly certain this question should have been asked before but I couldn't find the answer. I'm a user of OBD U8 which uses MS CE15.1 if I'm not mistaken.

Whenever I place a text or dimension based on a text/dim style, all relation with this style is broken, right?

So when - after I placed text/dim - I change their style it doesn't change all of the existing text/dim. It's a bit different from how I'm used to it (in some different software) but I suppose this is the way it's supposed to go for Microstation/Bentley.

Is there any (easy) way to update all existing text/dimension elements with a given style in a model to reflect the changes in that style?

Thank you!

Johan

  • You can select all of the items you wish to change and use the "Change Text Attributes" or "Change Dimension Style" tools.
Do be aware that for Note elements, you may need to use both tools, and that Notes don't always update properly.

Are you saving these changes to the styles, or are you just making changes and expecting items to update?

I, for one would be happy to find out that MicroStation STOPPED making automatic changes to overriden items. In V8i, any saved change to a style (especially dimensions!) was applied globally, which could wreak havoc on items that had certain settings overridden.

  • Thank you Mary. I know how to change/update the text/dim style manually. The issue is that when different styles are used whitin a drawing (for example different text size, ...) that I cannot just select all elements and do the update. Is there a way to select those items by the style they are created with?

What I would see as two possibilities:

    • Either there was a change to a style (in a DGNLIB) which must be applied to a series of existing drawings (eg. a client requesting a specific font, text size, ...);
    • Or a file-level override of the style which must be applied to the active drawing.

What do you man by 'overriden items'? Overrides on object level (single dimension element)? Those should indeed remain as they are even when the style changes.

  • Yes, the Element Selection tool has tabs that would allow you to select by text or dimensions style. They are not shown by default, but you can open them by right-clicking the other selection tabs, and then choosing those options to be open.

Yes, you can select all your dimensions of *style* and update them all at once. But no, MicroStation has not in the past recognized and retained individual element overrides - for example, whether terminators are inside or outside. When you select and update a dimension to a current style, it updates every property to the current style, including anything you you may have changed previously. There is no way to only update a dimension to part of the style. This has been a source of frustration for years, complicated by the fact that there is no way to easily revise individual dimensions after placement.

Text is much the same way, except that the Change Text Attributes dialog does allow for application of individual overrides.

  • Thank you Mary! This is indeed what I was looking for. And my knowledge about Microstation has been increased again.

  • You're welcome. I only learned about the extra tabs recently, and they are quite useful.
