Setting "invert y and Z" in the export fbx dialog as a default

Hi all, for exporting .fbx files, is it possible to set the invert y and Z as a default through configs?  Of is it possible to set it as part of the keyin "export fbx"?

  • I believe the setting to ensure the Invert Y and Z toggle on the FBX Export Settings dialog is stored within the design file your currently working within. There is no specific configuration variable or key-in to toggle this specific item on this dialog. I do not believe it is saved to the User Preference File as Save Settings did not affect this after performing this and moving between files. You could possibly define this to be toggled whichever way you require in your seed file or use a macro.

  • If it is true that MicroStation Connect saves the state of the “Invert Y and Z” option in the DGN file, then that is fantastic but it certainly doesn’t do it in MicroStation V8i SS3. I use the FBX exporter all the time to create environments for Virtual Reality and what I really need is for the “Stroke Tolerance” value to be saved in the DGN file as well. Architectural modeling is a very iterative process with the same file being exported many times throughout its life cycle. Having to remember what Stroke Tolerance a particular file should be using is a major impediment to a consistent workflow.

The other feature that I really, really, really wish the FBX exporter had, is the option to name the exported meshes by their material names. Currently meshes are named mesh, mesh 1, mesh 2, etc which makes it impossible for Unity to accurately keep track of any custom settings that we might have applied to a particular mesh as we iterate on the design over and over again. I’ve only had one experience with ArchiCAD FBX files and because they name their meshes as per their material names, it meant that Unity had no problems at all when it came to retaining customised mesh settings across many iterations of the design.

  • Can confirm that the FBX Export Settings are not stored in the DGN - they remain intact only during an active Microstation session. Close Microstation and they revert to the defaults below.

I agree with Andrew Novinc's comments. In addition, the material definitions exported to FBX from Microstation include their DGN filename   - which is something I would like to change. I often name my files to include today's date (eg. filename_2 March.dgn). The problem is that a material in the FBX is then named filename_2 March.dgn_255_255_255_vis which means that if I export the updated DGN file filename_3 March.dgn then the FBX material name changes to filename_3 March.dgn_255_255_255_vis. I would prefer the FBX to retain just the material name as described in the Microstation Material Table.
