Rename element attributes/Item Types imported from shapefile

I have imported a dataset from a shapefile that includes a number of attributes. The naming convention of the attributes isnt very nice and i want to rename them, but i cant figure out how to do it within Microstation. I can see the attributes when i view the element properties, but these do not appear in the Item Types window where i would normally create and edit items/attributes attached to elements.  Please can someone help me?

  • Hi Lee,

It is not possible to do it using user tools, available in MicroStation. Because EC data is treated as "internal base technology", MicroStation does not provide any tool to access it, only several basic key-ins.

I can see the attributes when i view the element properties, but these do not appear in the Item Types window where i would normally create and edit items/attributes attached to elements.

As explained in the discussion, linked by , SHP attributes, displayed in MicroStation as Items, are not Item Types. This minor naming difference is crucial, because Items are any EC data, whereas Item Types represent "user optimized EC data subset", so Item Type tool are not allowed to work with "full EC data".

    Please can someone help me?

Because every EC property has name and display label, it is possible to export EC schema, created when SHP data was imported, manually update it (change version, add displayLabel setting) and import it back (to update internally stored previous schema version).

For one file, it is not extremely complicated task, on the other hand it is not on "user level" (because direct editing XML is required).
