Odd behavior of a parametric Cell

Hi Everybody,

I have in some spare time tried to wrap my head into how to make Parametric Cells.

In my second (Or third) attempt I have made a Stay Bolt with nuts and washers. All solids are parametrically binded together. The Stay Bolt seems to work perfectly when I'm testing it in the dgn file while adjusting the constraints values, but when I'm exporting the model into a cell library and reinsert it in my model as a parametric cell, it acts odd.

The visible parameters does not affect the cell. I really can't figure out why.

I have added the dgn file into this question, so you will be able to see and test it your self.

Any hints/explanations to why the cell acts as it does will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Ole,

Please advise on the Product / Version being used see Best Practices

If I open your file in MicroStation CONNECT Update 16.2 (10.16.02.34) both the graphics titled 'Model' and 'Cell' Display the same. That said I was able to reproduce placing a different Variation, but not all.

I can see you have placed several Parametric / Graphic shared cells in this file previously. (See Cell Library dialog with 'Show Shared Cells & Parametric Cell Definitions enabled). May be you could post the original Cell Library if needing further assistance. (Assuming the dgn is not the one being used).

I copied your file and removed the 'Graphics' under the heading 'Cell' also removed all shared Cell Instances. In addition Compressed the file and set the Cell Type 'Parametric' in the Model Properties. (File attached).

Placing this as a Parametric Cell (All Variations) into a new design appears to be OK.

  • Hi Carl,

I'm not sure in what you mean when you write that I have placed several Parametric / Shared cells in the file previously? The file has been used to I  make several cells and experiments. The Cells have been exported to a proper cell library and then deleted again from my file.

The stay Bolt I have build is parametrically locked. When I export this Stay Bolt into a Cell library, it acts odd when I reinsert it into my file as earlier  mentioned. And the odd behavior is regardless if I have placed the Stay Bolt in a cell library that contains several different cells or if I retrieve the cell from a brand new cell library with only the one Stay Bolt that is in question.

A question that had popped up in my mind, is the problem that I have build the Stay Bolt in a DGN file and then saved it into a Cell library. Could it be that some information gets lost during the export from the DGN file in to the Cell library? With that tested, the cell still acts odd. Some of the variable does not change the model according to the changed values.

I really can't figure out what is wrong with this parametric model.

The parametric cell is build and tested in MS 10.14.02.01. I have noticed that you have tested the model in a newer version. This could maybe mean something, but it shouldn't.

    Best Regards

    Ole
