Loosing dwg reference attachments override settings [CE 16.2]

I have floorplans to be attached to my drawngs. As many others I want my flooplan references greyed out.

I generally work in dgns. I attach the floorplan, Set the overrides of all levels to grey and switch the reference >Presentation "Level Overides" on. That works well with dgn-references. Yet often I just attach dwg-floorplans. I was under the impression that with the attachment of an dwg I should be able to also use the overrides. And so it appears. But after reopening the overide settings are lost.(To be more precise:The Presentation Level Overide is still on but the attachments overides colors are all lost)

I am sure that I used this ever so often for DWG-attachments as well. But now it does not work any more(?) If my memory serves correctly we had the issue on an off with previous versions(?)  .I am increasingly doubting my recollection when I am seeing issues long time overcome popping up again.

Perhaps someone could test this with V8i to see if the behaviour has changed in CONNECT?

  • Hi Jon,

It must be something with the master dgn (was a Save As from dwg) It must have inherited the inability to set overrides ... How can that be?

I now created a new file (from a delivered seedfile) and copied in the content in (via referencing and copying) Then I again attached the floorplan.(dwg) And voila the new file keeps the overrides.

    {I am soo tired of workarounds - again hours of working time lost}

  • I agree it is frustrating not being able to determine where or how the problems occur in certain instances like this one.

In this case you found it was the file (converted from DWG) and not the software that was causing the issue (nice catch).

What I would do is send this finding to Bentley (Service Request) along with the DGN in hopes that they can determine what caused this issue and if this is a bug with the DWG conversion process. Of course everyone in the communities knows that you may never get an answer/fix, but at least it is recorded.

If you do pursue this with Bentley please post any findings.

  • Hi Tim, I have done that.

I suppose this must be a new "feature" of recent versions (or an old regression) when using Save As ... DGN. Maybe also something in the used seedfile (speculating)

I just have to add another step in my regime to work with (terrible) DWGs of multiple sources.

    1. Save the DWG As DGN (OptionS: without Shared Cells and Unused Shared Cells! This is the ONLY way -that I know of - to get normal cells that still have items or tags that you can work with - title blocks in particular)

    2. a. NEW: create an all new dgn, attach the DGN and copy in the model content. (that is hard because there may be all kinds of level settings that will not be copied)

    2. c. check and correct units and scales (something I always get lost.

    2. b. import Sheet models and redirect the "Viewport" settings to the design model.

    3. repeat - because probably something went astray along the way...

    n. eventually start working

I do not think that this could be easily automated,as there are a lot of variables. If I would only have one source maybe. But we are mostly rolling forward existing planning towards documentation.

  • the file (converted from DWG) and not the software

I assume it is the SaveAs... software bit after all
