Optimized fence clipping in Connect U16 do not make any sence with references attached

Hi

I had to do new clipped areas from ground elevation information where all elements were shapes, my plan was to clip and copy  my area from reference information with the Optimized fence clipping option set to on in preferences.

and then placed fence use fence clip function with place fence/clip by element, but I had my area non planar so the fence result looks like this:

I changed my area to planar and did the same place fence/clip by element, selected my planar area:

Then I used the copy/move command (copy) and set the copy to fence and clip

But the result when copy from reference with these settings did not produce new shapes in clipped areas, so this don´t work when copying from reference information!!

I tested and noticed that this workflow If you have all the information in your active file works just fine, it clips and creates new shapes in clip boundary.

Fine, then I knew that I had to merge into master all my references i wanted to do this function.. BUT for my surprise when I selected all my references in attach reference dialog box and chose "Merge into master"

This option dialog box did also appear:

WHAT?!

There isn't an option to merge into master by fence what I know of, and when you can´t "clip fence" with merge into master command there will be no elements to needed processing Optimized "fence" clipping, merge into master copy the whole reference file to our master file as is, with no options whatever!

Have I missed something here? the same thing was also with V8 (Select Series) so this is no Connect issue what I know of.

What would make sense is that the Allow Optimized fence clipping:

Does not exist i preferences:

Instead in every function that can activate this option, ex copy:

  • Hi Rod

Your suggestion is working IF the optimized fence clipping is enabled (on) in preferences. if it is disabled it don´t work so just to check the dialog box when merge into master "Allow Optimized fence clipping" don´t work. You have to enable the function in preferences first.

  • Hi Oto
Yes I know, thank you for information anyway.

  • And don´t forget to disable optimized fence clipping in the preferences when you are done!!
This function is NOT recommended to have enabled always, so disable always after you used it!

    //Tom

  • Example video that shows IF the Optimized fence clipping is Disabled (OFF) in preferences, this do not work even if the merge into master dialog box is set to Allow optimized fence clipping (ON), these two videos is only showing the reference merge to master option regarding enabled or disabled in preferences vs. only in the dialog box that you have the option to select on/off to allow optimized fence clipping directly in merge to master (not included preference setting).

  • My suggestion to Bentley about this function "Optimized fence clipping" is:

Take away the preferences enable/disable and move the "Optimize fence clipping" enable/disable options to the function dialog boxes that has an function for optimize fence clipping! in these examples copy function from reference/active file and reference merge into master "allow optimized fence clipping". It would be much easier for me "user" to controll when I want use optimized fence clipping or not directly in the function I am using instead of going through preferences with the risk that I forget to disable the function after, when I don´t want to use it anymore!

I don` know how many of you is using or used this function but for me this is super function released in early V8 times, it is powerful and great, if you know what you are going to do with it.

Thank you to Rod for learning me saving time by using this function even when merge/copy from reference information.

    Best Regards
