"OS could not load... MDL Loader: Unable to load library ... error 193." in Text Window when opening any file on MicroStation V8i SS10

I get the above error when opening any file via Projectwise with Microstation V8i SS10 (or also with simply opening the MicroStation V8i SS10 application from my desktop).

I did install a few updates for ProjectWise and Microstation CONNECT a few days back but I cannot remember if I opened MicroStation V8i between then and these errors (so its possible these errors are from some update). I have already spent hours trying to uninstall and reinstall ProjectWise and V8i (along with deleting ProjectData and ProjectFiles data for both as well as following this forum thread: https://communities.bentley.com/products/administration/f/product-administration-forum/222304/cannot-open-v8i-files-from-projectwise-getting-lots-of-error-193-s-with-dll-s/683094 with no solution found from trying all these steps. I also posted my debug log for Microstation V8i here:

 3302.msdebug.txt

I have stumped my IT and some Bentley specialists with this, any help would be super appreciated!

  • I get the above error

Your screenshot shows that MicroStation is looking for a ProjectWise (PW) DLL (mcm.dll) that doesn't exist.

You need to install the PW Explorer client software for MicroStation V8i.

I did install a few updates for ProjectWise and Microstation CONNECT

MicroStation CONNECT is a different product to MicroStation V8i.  CONNECT is 64-bit and V8i is 32-bit.  Application DLLs are also different — mcm.dll for CONNECT is not the same as mcm.dll for V8i.

There is a ProjectWise Forum that might be a better place to post your question.

  • Hi Jon,

Thank you for the response. The issue is that I do have PW Explorer software downloaded (the same software that I have always used and everyone in my company with the same setup uses). That file and the exact pathway does exist, I have mapped it out myself.

Also, I understand that Connect is a different product, we are in the middle of a switch to Connect from V8i but a few projects need to be finished up with V8i. I only mentioned that because I was worried that updates for Connect somehow confused projectwise or the pathway that projectwise uses to get to that DLL library.

I had reinstalled the original PW explorer I have always used yet I still get the same error.
