How much longer will RSC files be around?

RSC files seem like such old technology, is there a programming reason the Bentley is keeping them around. Unless you use them every day or at least once a week, it is difficult at best to get in and edit and create ne linestyles. What are Bentley's plans for phasing them out?

  • With the Engineering true type fonts, you can pretty much eliminate RSC files for fonts. For custom line styles they are still required. Yes, you can reference custom line styles from a dgnlib file, but you still need an RSC file to edit them. It's also quite cumbersome to remove custom line styles from a dgnlib file.

RSC files are used for more than just fonts and custom line styles. If you save your selection options in the old Select By Attributes dialog, those are saved to a RSC file. Similarly, selections in the Design File Cleanup tool are saved to RSC files. There may be others, but those are the two that come to mind.

Just a hunch on my part... Due to how ingrained RSC files still appear to be, I would not expect them to be completely phased out until the successor to the CONNECT Edition is introduced.

  • You CAN eliminate RSC fonts, but that all depends on the client...There are plenty who may stick with "their fonts" for years.

And Bentley would need to significantly improve their game with DGNLIB linestyles before they can do away with RSC files entirely.
