Save As in the New MicroStation Connect

As a part of my job, I have to go into a MicroStation DGN, look at the title block and then rename the existing file as a new DGN using the information in the title block. In the new MicroStation Connect, you go to 'File', which takes you to the 'Front Page', then 'Save As'. The 'Save As' dialog box will pop up on the 'front page'. However, you cannot see the title block. I used to be able to just do the 'File', 'Save As' drop down and still see my title blocks.

Is there a shortcut for 'Save As' that will allow me to use the 'Save As' dialog box while I am in the drawing, looking at the title block?

  • I answered my own question after further research. In the Key-In, you have to type "Save As V8". That's a pain...

  • One suggestion would be to create a seed file with the title block information , then when you need to create a new file when you select New you use the seed and then create a new file with the new name and the title block will be in the file already.

  • Thanks, but that was not the answer I needed. I figured it out myself. I have to key-in "Save As V8" while in the drawing.

A part of what I have to do is take existing drawings, open them to view the title blocks, and then rename the drawing with the contents of the title block in the new drawing name.

For example: A drawing's name is "9533A4CS.DGN" and I have to rename it to, "BLDG_XXXX_Sht43_Arch_A-05_CaseWork_Details_New.DGN".

Doing the 'File', 'Save As' in the new Bentley Connect takes you to a different page, which means you cannot see the drawing itself, and thus, harder to view the title block in order to do the renaming.

  • While this may not be quite the solution you are looking for, you may be able to select the text from the title block that you need and Ctrl+X copy it so that you can Ctrl+V paste it into the new file name.

I do agree that having to leave the drawing view to do any "file" functions is clunky at best...
But I'm a cranky old Gen-X who lived with menus for over 30 years...The whole "backstage", "workflow" and "ribbon" concept annoys me, no matter what software I'm in.
    (get that off mah lawn...)

  • Thanks, that would work. However, I have 5 separate text lines in the title block that needed to be summarized into one drawing name.

I figured it out myself. I have to type in the Key-In line "Save As V8" to get the Save As Dialog Box to pop up while looking at the drawing itself.. What threw me off was that I tried type in 'SaveAs' and it didn't work. Instead, it is 'Save As V8'.

It is stupid. "Save As" as a key-in will not work. Because the MicroStation Connect wants you to type in the specific type of drawing you want to save it as. However all of the commands, "Save As V7", "Save As DWG", "Save As V8" all pull up the same 'Save As' Dialog Box.

I'm also a Cranky Old Gen-X who lived with menus and dialog boxes since 1991! (I started out with MicroStation J and AutoCAD R11) Both MicroStation and AutoCAD are making it harder to do the core functions while focusing on the fancy stuff. Don't burry the common drawing commands in a ribbon. Don't 'stupidfy' the commands to make it harder to do what I was able to do. The current trend in all software seems to be to make it harder to customize to user's preference.
