Can manager windows open automatically?

I'm not sure if I'm using the right terminology. I'm used to using Civil3D where I can create a "workspace" where my properties manager, layers manager, xref manager, etc. automatically open whenever the program opens. I haven't figured out if there's a way to do that in Microstation, so I have I open the Properties window, Level Manager, Reference window, etc. each time I open it. Is there a way to set it up where they will open automatically?

I'm running Microstation Connect on Windows 10.

  • Hi Aaron,

You can dock them and pin them in place or you can use a VBA macro to run key-ins to subsequently make the dialogs appear, (if the dialogs are undocked, their locations would hopefully appear where they were when last visible).

  • Alright, I was unaware of the docking. I think that's because I'm using 2 monitors, and the dialog boxes I want to keep open are "floating" on the 2nd monitor. As far as I can tell, there's not a way to dock them on that monitor.

I don't know anything about VBA macros. Is there any documentation somewhere on it?

  • Sure there is a way to dock windows on the second monitor. It needs you to set the number of application windows to "2". It's in Settings => user => Preferences => Operation

That way Microstation will always start with two "windows", each of which you can maximize to one of your monitors. Then you can dock dialog boxes to either of these windows. For "views" you can click on the icon on the top left, then "change screen" to move them to another application window.

After changing the application windows setting you'll have to restart Microstation. Don't forget to Save Settings when all windows are located where you want them.

Good luck setting up your perfect workspace!

In case you change physical workspaces a lot and have different number of external monitors, it can be a hassle. On one of my desks I have a wide screen monitor where I have both application windows on the same monitor and use the windows split screen to put them side by side.

I have created an Idea some time ago to be able to save the application windows settings and be able to share them or recall different setups. You can vote it up if you like: Save application windows setup | MicroStation Ideas Portal (aha.io)
