I need to plot shapes in "Wireframe" display style without a fill, together with filled "surface" elements.
How can one display and plot “surface” elements with a fill in “Wireframe” display style?

What is the exact version no. (e.g. v10.x.y.z) of MicroStation that you are using? Use key-in VERSION to see the version no. in the MicroStation Message Center, or Help→About MicroStation in the backstage.
VERSION
See this blog that shows you how to obtain MicroStation's version number.

Have you checked if you have "Fill" activated in the view attributes?
If it is not activated it does not show fill.

Currently using:
OpenPlant Modeler - Version: 10.09.00.74
[MicroStation - Version: 10.14.02.01]
I’m not able to check if it’s possible with display styles and a single reference, but I imagine it’s easily achieved by stacking 2 different reference files on top of each other. The map file would be lower in the update sequence, would not have the helix visible, and should have a wireframe display style, the helix reference would have only the helix visible and use whatever display style that gives it the necessary filled/shaded appearance.
