I have done this task, "Applying an Element Template to a SHP Reference File", in the older V8i edition. However, I cannot get it to work in CONNECT.
The workflow is posted here: "Applying an Element Template to a SHP Reference File" [Applying an Element Template to a SHP reference file - MicroStation Wiki - MicroStation - Bentley Communities]
Here is screen capture of my current MIcroStation session.
Element Templates are created. 'ZAI22SLP' is the blue line (drawing with the Place Line tool). 'YIA' is the green line (drawing with the Place Line tool). So, this proved the Element Templates are working as expected. However, when the same Element Templates are applied to the Reference Attachments, they do not apply the symbology settings. The dots (hard to see in the image as shown in this post) should be blue (ZAI22SLP) and the curved line should be green (YIA). Save Settings and restarting has no effect.
Any ideas?
What is the exact version no. (e.g. v10.x.y.z) of MicroStation that you are using? Use key-in VERSION to see the version no. in the MicroStation Message Center, or Help→About MicroStation in the backstage.
VERSION
See this blog that shows you how to obtain MicroStation's version number.

When you attach the SHP, do you see the Templates option in CONNECT? MicroStation Help doesn't have much to say about using a template when attaching a SHP file.

Jon,
The version is 10.16.02.34.
No there are no 'special' attachment "settings or options" during attachment. of shapefiles, as references. Just assignment of Element Templates, after they are in the References dialog.
